All's well at Soquel's Sawasdee Thai

Sawasdee

Sawasdee is a modern Thai greeting derived from a Sanskrit word for well-being. At Sawasdee Thai Cuisine in Soquel, the greeting is always a pleasant one.

In Thailand, tea leaves are often mixed with spices, a common additive being star anise, giving the tea an exotic character. Thai Iced Tea ($1.95) begins with a strong brew sweetened with sugar. Poured over ice, condensed milk is floated on top, giving the illusion of an orange sherbet parfait.

Over one hundred dishes are available on Sawasdee's dinner menu alone. The peanut sauce with the turmeric-colored grilled Chicken Sate skewers ($6.95) was thick and smooth, the chicken white and lean. Yellow Chicken Curry ($8.95) in a coconut milk-based sauce was sensationally flavored with a secret blend of spices, the onions and scallop-edged carrots fresh and still crisp. As one of the "hot and spicy" selections, its medium heat was delightful.

The affordable weekday Special Lunch menu ($6.95 to $8.95) offers more than 40 choices including Thai-style noodle soups.

Friendly, filling and flavorful, I acquired a sense of well-being indeed.

Sawasdee Thai Cuisine, 5050 Soquel Dr., Soquel, 462-5051. Serving beer and wine. Open daily for lunch and dinner.
