Second Harvest Kick-off Luncheon A Hit | Print |  E-mail
Written by Greg Archer
Thursday, 06 November 2008

Music, appreciation and focus on the goals ahead dominated the hour

Hundreds gathered in the ballroom of the Cocoanut Grove Thursday afternoon for Second Harvest Food Bank's Holiday Food Drive Kick-off luncheon.

And what a luncheon it was. From the get-go, spirits were high, thanks, in part, to the talents of members of the Voice Tech Class from Monte Vista Christian School. Guided enthusiastically by music director, Dr. Tony Dehner, the skilled group sang for nearly 30 minutes, delivering often soul-stirring renditions of familiar pieces like "Hallelujah" and "Putting on the Ritz." After they received a standing ovation, SHFB Development Director Christine Woodard spoke, introducing a fine posse of noteworthy locals who have been making a significant difference in the community through their efforts with SHFB.

A few noteworthy souls—and there are many others—that deserve your attention:  Pastor Paul Spurlock of Twin Lakes Church (his goal this year is generate 500,000 pounds of food); Community leaders Sandi Easton and Annieglass maven Annie Morhauser; and the energetic, youthful Ashton Holtzinger (of Bay Federal Credit Union), who is 2007's "Coordinator of the Year"; and Danny Keith (of the Santa Cruz Skate Shop), a man responsible for the creativity behind the Grind Out Hunder Campaign.

Executive Director Willy Elliot-McCrea—it's hard to say "no" to this passionate man—offered closing remarks, pointing out why this year, more than ever, hunger is a major issue. In fact, the E.D. noted how, last Monday the Food Bank was slammed, handing out bags of food to a staggering 1,300 families. In comparison, last year at this time, the amount of bags given out early in the week hovered near the 600 mark.

So, where does that leave us? In a terrific spot to tap into our creativity and discover new ways of giving. Remember, for every dollar of food, the Food Bank can dole out $9 worth of food. One option: Look around, connect with co-workers and devise a unique goal that can be met.
