After all the time and money candidates spent getting elected, it's comforting to know that citizens can still get involved in local government just by showing up. Santa Cruz has 19 vacancies, and 38 total openings on various boards which advise the city council on topics ranging from art to water. While half of the openings are currently filled by people who might reapply -- call them 'incumbents' -- reappointment is not guaranteed. To apply, download a form from this link to the city's website , and return it to the city clerk at 809 Center St. by Jan. 14, 2009. Qualified applicants will then meet with the city council members on Jan. 20 at 7 p.m., to schmooze and make their case. Appointments will be made by Jan. 27.
Here's what's available:
- Arts Commission: 3 vacancies
- Board of Building Appeals: 2 reappointments
- Commission for the Prevention of Violence Against Women: 2 reappointments, 3 vacancies
- Downtown Commission: 1 reappointment, 1 vacancy
- Equal Employment Opportunity Commission: 1 vacancy
- Historic Preservation Commission: 2 reappointments
- Measure K (marijuana) Oversight Committee: 2 reappointments, 2 vacancies
- Parks and Recreation Commission: 1 reappointment, 1 vacancy
- Planning Commission: 1 reappointment
- Public Art Committee: 3 vacancies
- Public Works Commission: 3 reappointments, 1 vacancy
- San Lorenzo River Committee: 2 reappointments
- Santa Cruz City Transportation Commission: 1 reappointment
- Sister Cities Committee: 2 reappointments, 4 vacancies
- Water Commission: 2 reappointments
All committees and commissions have different requirements, though in general you must be a city resident to qualify.
