Surf City Billiards is right on cue
Above the Blue Lagoon where the Attic previously showcased music and art, the owners of Surf City Billiards and Cafe are eager to accommodate. Like a swirling tide, blue walls in the bar area are washed with white, and embellished with fishing gear, surf boards, and photographs. The game room is encircled by counters and tall stools. A pentagon-shaped bank of televisions, reminiscent of center court at an NBA game, is suspended over a sea of 15 immaculate blue-felted pool tables. On Friday and Saturday, play for $14 per hour, just $10 otherwise. Surf City also features shuffleboards, professional dart boards, and a televised trivia game that pits your knowledge against that of players across North America.
The small but nicely executed menu includes vegan Lettuce Wraps ($4.99) which included julienne green and yellow squash and Asian noodles in lettuce leaves with an red pepper-infused vinaigrette. I added crispy chicken for $1 more. The medium bowl of Jambalaya ($5.49), perfect for the autumn chill, was rich with chicken and spicy sausage rounds, and was served with green onion slivers. The Chipotle Burger ($6.99) on a wheat roll was of summer barbeque quality, juicy even when ordered well-done. I seriously enjoyed the Sweet Potato Fries, salty and savory at first, each bite releasing a sweet earthiness. With the smoky flavor of Chipotle in the aioli-style sauce, I devoured every last one. Last week, the daily happy hour (4 p.m. to 7 p.m.) featured appetizer deals ($1.99 to $3.99) and beer specials.
Whether you're inclined to kick back in the circle of leather sofas, enjoy a quick bite to start your night, or get into the game, Surf City Billiards and Cafe is a sure shot.
