Santa Cruz Sandwiches caters to locals | Print |  E-mail

The local mid-county deli serves meals your way in house and on the go.

Santa Cruz Sandwiches

In a tiny strip mall across from Harbor High, Santa Cruz Sandwiches serves weekday breakfast and lunch. Owners Horst Wolf Jr. and wife Jennifer explained the menu, which a customer assured me was "all good". Build your own sandwich from a list of six meats including roast beef and pastrami, five kinds of bread, and a selection of cheese. Or choose from hot specialty sandwiches and hot dogs. By 12:30, a steady stream of students seeking alternate scenery and nourishment waited patiently in line.

When autumn turns the air chilly, soup is made daily. The broth of today's vegetarian minestrone was richly scented with parsley and celery, and full of carrots and short tubes of macaroni.

Breakfast sandwiches are available until noon. Cheese and egg fill a bagel or English muffin, with your choice of sausage or ham ($3). Add avocado, onion and tomato for a dollar.

White paper packages held my quickly-made sandwiches. The warm Reuben ($6) on dark and light marbled rye was stuffed with sour cabbage, corned beef, Thousand Island dressing, and mild Swiss cheese.

The famous Tuna Melt ($6) with its griddle-toasted sourdough bread held sweetly-flavored tuna not overwhelmed by mayonnaise. With bits of green celery, thinly sliced tomato and red onions, its perfectly melted cheese stretched lengthily like that of a good pizza.

The walk-up deli counter is closed on Saturdays, but available for catering.  Through their wholesale business, Santa Cruz Sandwiches can also be found at quick stop favorites such as DJ's Mini Mart ($4.39).

Santa Cruz Sandwiches , 2226 Soquel Avenue, Santa Cruz, 476-8079. Serving breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

sounds great, as do many of the places and dishes you cover...although, speaking of "catering to locals," it would be great to see more meat-free options written about. i'm sure there are plenty that would please all readers! plus, who really wants to see stacks of meat (or, looking back- a bucket of KFC) staring back at them from the Good Times' homepage?
