The Red's Sunday night regulars break out with a show at Moe's Alley

7 Come 11

Being accosted by some dude high on drugs can actually be a good thing. Just ask 7 Come 11 , whose prized Hammond organ met such a fate recently at The Red. “Some guy on large amounts of psychedelics was flipping out on drugs, picking up stools, and did a cartwheel into my organ,” Gianni Staiano remembers with a laugh. “After he freaked out and hit the organ, he realized what he did and shoved a bunch of money in our tip jar. It was a $300 tip! I even have an audio recording of it.” That recording is no doubt highly entertaining, but it’s this week’s live DVD recording at Moe’s that has the guys revved up. The 3-year-old band’s show promises free drink tickets and a set that might include some tangential forays into Led Zeppelin and ... Journey? Yep. Unleashing the expected jazz and funk-infused jam-rock that seems inherent in an organ trio, the guys in 7 Come 11 are also known to drive through some untraditional covers for an ensemble of their make-up. Drummer Kris Di Noto explains: “We’ll be playing something and then in Mark’s solo, he’ll start playing all sorts of shit that you really don’t want to hear sometimes.” Mark Van Ness is the band’s guitarist. Like a jukebox that’s catalogued every classic, his love of revisiting pop rock memory lane from time to time, whether or not the rest of the band likes it, propels them away from any designated jazz groove—and it’ll hook you in. Add to that some stellar Dr. Lonnie Smith and original numbers, like the aptly titled “Giannicakes” (boasting some sweet bass and psychedelic keys from Staiano on the Hammond), and you’ve got the  ensemble’s first-rate EP. The trio, whose name is poached from a song by jazz’s King of Swing clarinetist Benny Goodman, is giving free drinks to its audience this week to fuel the big recording sesh. Staiano explains, “We want to throw a party for people and show everybody what we can do, take it and run with it.” Hopefully, the cartwheels are under control this time.
