The venerable institution provides late-night crepe escapes

Crepe Place

A classic Victorian dwelling has housed The Crepe Place since the 1989 earthquake destroyed its former Cooper House home. Its subtly lit front parlor, with rouge walls and burgundy-painted, pressed tin ceilings holds the expanded bar. A century ago, this room might have hosted afternoon tea, but now features live music most nights, typically with an $8 cover.

On the walls framed posters recall memories of classic movie scenes. Pass through the narrow hallway to the back dining room, which looks out onto the lushly-landscaped patio where infrared heaters cast a warm glow. The ceilings are ringed by shelves, each supporting a mother lode of memorabilia including an appaloosa carousel horse.

The seemingly omnipresent owner Adam Bergeron took time out from his duties to greet diners. Santa Cruz Aleworks hoppy IPA was happily on tap, and was soon followed by a loaf of freshly baked warm wheat bread.

Dinner crepes are available à la carte, or with your choice of homemade soups or dinner salad. A bowl of creamy herbed Boston Clam Chowder accompanied the Crêpe Fredo ($16.50). A fat, folded triangular pancake encased chunks of blue point crab, enticing layers of baby spinach, and strings of thinly sliced onions and melted Swiss cheese. It was bathed in a rich white wine-imbued Alfredo sauce and generously dusted with grated Parmesan cheese.

The Shrimp Creole Crêpe ($15.50) featured bay shrimp, basil, and an indulgence of green bell peppers, topped with a spicy, brick red Creole marinara.

Open until midnight Sunday through Thursday, and 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday, The Crepe Place’s late night menu makes it the perfect finale for a show at the Rio Theatre.

The Crepe Place, 1134 Soquel Ave, Santa Cruz, 429-6994. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner daily, late night menu, and weekend brunch. Visit thecrepeplace.com.
