New GT Events Calendar | Print |  E-mail
Written by GTstaff
Monday, 25 August 2008

Now our events section is even easier to use, both for readers and people wanting to post their event! We've taken months of feedback from users and reprogrammed our calendar section from the ground up in order to make it the most complete and user-friendly Santa Cruz events stop on the web.

The program is still in beta, which means we'd love feedback on ways we can make it even better (just send an e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ). In the meantime, here are some of the highlights of what's improved:

  • Simpler and more powerful submission form. Registered users now have a simple form with easy-to-use features at a glance. The "repeating events" section is more powerful than ever, so you don't have to submit the same event over and over! Locations are stored in a database, so if yours is already there, you don't need to type the address and contact information ... just pick it from the list. If it's not there, adding your location is easy and instantaneous. (NOTE: As before, you must be logged in to see the "Add Your Event" tab at the top of the calendar.)
  • Automated e-mails about the status of your submission. We now have a program in place to notify you when your event has been approved, or letting you know why it has been rejected if that's the case. Usually events are rejected because they do not include required information about time, location, and price, or are outside Santa Cruz County. We also do not list announcements (such as calls for entry or auditions) on our calendar -- those may be posted freely on our Forum.
  • Easy navigation. Flip from daily to weekly or monthly view in a flash. The program no longer reloads the entire window. There is also a drop down list of categories, so you can zoom in on just the events you're interested in. To find out more about an event, a small window will pop up the description when you hover over the title, or you can click the title for a pop-up box with complete details.
  • Download events right to your calendar! Each event has a button to be automatically downloaded to your Outlook or iCal program, so you can schedule your day more easily. Or, if you really want to know what's going on in town, registered members can use the "Sync" link at the bottom of the page, which allows you to download entire categories -- or even the whole GT database -- to the program of your choice.
  • Where's that location? In the event details window, a simple link will zip you to a map of the venue.
  • Invite your friends. A button will automatically e-mail the event information to anyone you'd like.

There are loads of other small conveniences built in, and just like before, the online calendar serves as our one-stop shop for events to include in the print edition. So if you want your event publicized for free in Good Times (and it costs less than $10), just put it online, and you're done.

comment on event pricing

The events Nonviolent Communication Santa Cruz holds all use sliding scale pricing. We quote a high & low estimate. While the GTweekly calendar interface accepts both figures all I see displayed on an events page is the higher number, and it's listed as "Suggested ($):"
Something I liked about the previous setup as the ability to specify details about the pricing, such as "$120-60 sliding scale for 4 Mondays (not necessarily consecutive)."
Any suggestions on how to work around this?

Hi Jeremy,

The range does appear in the week and day views, and is put into the print edition. I just need to figure out a way to display it in the event pop up box. I'll try to get to that soon. Thanks for the suggestion ... it's a good one! B)

Meanwhile, for complicated pricing, you're always welcome to put that information into the description. As long as price info there isn't redundant, we leave it in. This is also great for events with many levels of discount ($10/general, $8/student, $7/member, children under 12 free).
