Branciforte Bridge is Falling down | Print |  E-mail
Written by GTstaff
Wednesday, 02 January 2008

If you’re wondering what the unholy mess is and how long it’s going to be there: the Branciforte Bridge is being removed this week, and highway widening efforts will keep the crossing out of commission until sometime this autumn. Taking down bridges isn’t exactly dainty work: metal structures need to be yanked to the ground, and all that concrete needs to be crushed and pulverized for transportation. It’s going to be quite a racket for the next few days.

The interruption means a fun game of “how will the chicken cross Highway 1 to get to the other side?” Branciforte will be closed from Fairmount Avenue on the south side to Goss Avenue on the north, so people zipping from downtown to the hills are advised to use Market Street coming off Water Street and Morrissey Boulevard coming off Soquel Avenue. Cars on the highway will find themselves railroaded to one side of the median or the other as crews pave paradise to put up the wider parking lot. Maps and progress updates are at hwy1-17.caltrans.ca.gov .
