Wentai Liu, a professor of engineering at UC Santa Cruz, oversaw the implantation of a microchip he designed in the eye of a blind patient last year, and now has 10 people enrolled in a clinic trial of the device. The chip is intended for blindness caused by broken light receptors in the retina—it relies on existing and healthy nerve fibers between the eyes and brain to work. Liu has been working on the project since 1988, and is teamed up with a private company called Second Sight in Sylmar, California.
