Would-be swindlers are targeting South County with the old Canadian Lottery scam, in which a fraudulent cashier’s check is sent with instructions to cash it and return the “taxes” via wire transfer. Saldana Hernandez contacted the Watsonville Law Center after receiving a check for $4,985, and recognizing it as too good to be true. The scam is particularly malicious because the victim is legally guilty of check fraud if they follow the instructions, even if they’re unaware the check is fake.
