Built in 1923, and sleeping quietly downtown for the past three years, the stunning Fox Theatre will be coming back to life early this year, thanks to the owners of Watsonville’s other cinema, Green Valley 8. A tall, Spanish Colonial building at the corner of Main and Maple Streets, the theatre is not expected to need a tremendous amount of refurbishing to come back online, but inspections and work are just beginning this month, according to manager Dawit Taddese. “We don’t have a solid date,” he says, adding that the management group is still discussing what kind of movies to show. In its previous incarnation, the Fox would occasionally show Spanish-language versions of blockbusters, as well as first-run Hollywood movies. There’s even some doubt at this point whether the theatre will open as a seven-day business, or only screen movies on weekends. The theatre, like many converted movie palaces from yesteryear, has three screens: one in the old main auditorium, and two in the split balcony section upstairs. The reopening comes at a time of renaissance in Watsonville, as a new Civic Plaza building opened at the nearby address of 200 Main St. on Jan. 2, with room to accommodate two office spaces and a restaurant or vendor in addition to the city’s government offices.
