The United Way originally planned to close its fire recovery fund on June 25, but with the outbreak at Trabing Road this weekend, the numerous patches lit by lightning, reports of yet another blaze on Highway 17 at the Summit, and extreme fire danger expected through the July 4 holiday, the fund will remain open "throughout the fire season." Promising that 100 percent of all funds will go to victims, the United Way is accepting checks at 1220 41st Ave. in Capitola, 95010, with the words "Santa Cruz County Fire Recovery Fund" in the memo line. You may also donate by credit card by calling 479-5466.
