The city's recycling center is receiving a statewide award for excellence on August 5. The Santa Cruz Resource Recovery Program is being recognized as the most Outstanding Recycling Program in California by the nonprofit organization CRRA (California Resource Recovery Association). Since 1995, Santa Cruz has increased its trash diversion rate from 35 percent to 62 percent, decreased its disposal tonnage from 72,066 tons to 54,140 tons, and increased the amount of recycled material from 6,293 tons to 14,880 tons. The center has also upgraded to accept many new plastics and other materials, and made recycling simpler for citizens by allowing all materials to be disposed together in its ubiquitous blue bins. The award will be shared with the city council at the September 9 meeting.
