On Independence Day, a monitor and keyboard, newly replaced from a recent office fire, were stolen from the Santa Cruz SPCA shelter on Chanticleer Avenue, along with a 12-week-old St. Bernard puppy named Tyra. The Santa Cruz Sheriff’s arrested a 23-year-old named Sam Jonas who confessed to the crime on July 12. He had been at the SPCA earlier in the day to adopt a puppy, but left angrily when he found out about the $200 fee. Tyra was recovered hours after the incident from a grocery store parking lot.
