Patio Panini | Print |  E-mail

At D’Anna’s Deli Trattoria, tucked into an attractive courtyard just south of the Soquel-Porter Street intersection, bamboo and palms stand tall, while bursts of bright pink geraniums spill earthbound.

Inside, the aroma of roasted turkey fills the air. The deli offers soups, spaghetti and ravioli, fresh salads including Chinese chicken with mandarin oranges and peanuts. They build a wide selection of Italian and deli sandwiches with flavorful ingredients like mortadella, salami, avocado and pastrami, with Swiss and provolone cheeses. My personal favorites are the panini.

Proscuitto, roasted red peppers and mozzarella ($7.25) takes grilled cheese to the next echelon. A large francesi-style roll was drizzled with olive oil, layered with paper-thin wafers of salt-cured ham, thick slices of white cheese, and bright strips of peppers before its trip to the panini press. A clamshell griddle with a weighted upper mandible crisps the bread.

This panino merges a perfect medley of flavors, with neither overpowering the others. Ham come with the earthy meatiness of a fine salami, soft mozzarella, and moist bell peppers. Tasty ingredients commingle to make other equally fabulous pressed sandwiches, such as crushed olives with flaked tuna and artichoke hearts, fresh green pesto with roast beef or creamy Brie, and roasted turkey with smoky bacon.

D’Anna’s Deli now serves breakfast Monday through Friday as well. Savoring a Breakfast Burrito alongside a soothing waterfall – what better way to start the day?

D’Anna’s Deli and Trattoria, 2841 Porter St, Soquel, 475-1436. Serving breakfast on weekdays from 8 a.m., and lunch through late afternoons. Closed Sundays. Check out dannasdeli.com/dhome.html
