Perched on a dock extending over rippling water, Aldo’s Harbor Restaurant has delivered picturesque outdoor dining for more than 30 years.

I relish summer mornings on this deck across the channel from the boat launch ramp, as the sun peeks through the fog. Armed with a mug of rich and strong black coffee, I gazed along the craggy pile of rocks that line the jetty, to the harbor’s mouth and the Walton Lighthouse. Cormorants with prehistoric hooked bills, and lacking typical seabird waterproofing, stood tall atop yellow buoys, extending their wings to dry, as if embracing the emerging sun. Runners and strollers traveled the adjacent path to access the half-mile stretch of Castle Beach.

My favorite dish at Aldo’s is the three-egg Pesto Omelet ($9.50). Cutting into its smooth and unblemished lemon-yellow surface reveals a thick layer of multi-herbed pesto, pristine sour cream and melted Swiss cheese.

Slices of thick, airy, dimple-topped fugasa bread, fresh from Aldo’s Italian Bakery in Soquel, were lightly toasted.

Serving perhaps the world’s best hash browns, these buttery grated potatoes were evenly crisp, kicked up another notch by the omelet’s escaping green-hued juices.

Although Aldo’s is a popular destination there’s plenty of metered parking in the harbor lot across the street, rather than in front of neighbors’ homes. Before you go, you can always preview the weather from the harbor’s web cam, accessible from the harbor tab on Aldo’s website.
