UN International Day of Peace and a Week of Festivals

RisaThursday, Mercury squares Pluto (careful with communication) while Mercury retro re-enters Virgo (careful of criticism and wash hands often). Friday is the new moon festival, 26 degrees Virgo, 11:44 a.m. (Pacific time). Join the NGWS, strengthening the hands and arms of all world servers, by reciting the Soul & Great Invocations and Mantram of Integration. Saturday is Rosh Hashanah, Jewish New Year. Tuesday is Autumn Equinox, Sun enters Libra, and the Year of the Soul begins.

Monday, Sept. 21 is the Feast Day of St. Matthew, tax collector and writer of the first Gospel. Matthew means, “Gift from God.” Monday is also United Nations International Day of Peace (UNIDP), not a holiday but a global event—internationaldayofpeace.org/.

Monday is a day of Peace-building (different than Peace-making or Peace-keeping) where the world’s nations, leaders, governments, communities and individuals are invited to end conflict, cease hostilities, creating a 24 hour period of non-violence and promoting Goodwill, Right Relations leading to Peace.

We know “The absence of war does not signify peace.” And that “Peace is an ongoing process.” In its Peace-building emphasis, the UNIDP focuses on creating a “culture of peace” through education leading to understanding and tolerance. Esoterically we are reminded of the Peace Equation. “Intentions for Goodwill (and acting upon this intention) create Right Relations with all Earth’s kingdoms which create Peace on Earth.” The dove is the symbol for the day.

ARIES (March 21-April 20) New endeavors come forth; all that’s been hidden emerges too and creates a transformative atmosphere around your work and daily life. Work and more work is given to you – work only you can accomplish. It will entail research, going back into the past, ordering, organizing and reassessing all agendas and work plans. You will need to schedule moments of exercise in between. View everything as opportunity.

TAURUS (April 21-May 21) You must begin a serious look at your health. Only if you are in the best of health can you tend and maintain the vast responsibilities you’re about to assume. Like Aries you’ll be receiving new responsibilities. They accelerate through the autumn and into the winter. What is your workplace environment like? A bit of freedom is about to occur.

GEMINI (May 22-June 20) Observe you life at home and see if in the next week or so life there changes dramatically or if something or someone enters your environment(s) creating transformation and calling you to further work and responsibilities. Something definitely occurs and it may upset what you feel as security. However it prepares you for the future. What music are you listening to?

CANCER (June 21-July 20) Are you busier than usual and are people depending upon you for strength and food and your usual cardinal qualities you keep hidden? So much needs to be accomplished and we have one-third the amount of time each day. Each morning and evening ends with a quandary. Someone from the past perhaps may call or be in touch. Or you’re dreaming about them or needing to make contact. You know contact releases Love. You need it.

LEO (July 21-Aug. 22) Everything that occurs this month is either about money and finances and relationships. Both can be volatile subjects, both need careful tending, both have a push/pull situation occurring. And then all of a sudden the focus moves toward what skills you have, how to gather more, and learning how to listen more carefully. Do you know about Re-Skilling, the educational aspect of Transition Town?

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Mercury has retrograded back to Virgo, returning through the backdoor. So many things you’ve done may need to be re-done. This is good. It gives you another opportunity to make things better and brighter than before. Re-doing is not a waste of time, but instead a time used for fixing, rethinking and remembering things forgotten. You also delve deeply into subtle thoughts and come to revelations.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) It is a time to be alone, behind curtains and veils of protection where a secret place of seclusion allows you to tend to personal needs, thoughts and feelings. It is good to have a journal; writing changes you hope can come forth in the autumn months. Unusual thoughts may flow through your mind this week. They contain the seeds of understanding and compassion and how to better serve. You need sleep.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Friends, groups you belong to and the communities you allow around you begin to articulate what you truly hope and wish for in the future. Exploring these ideas you realize you’re not hidden anymore and many people know and care about you and would value you as a friend. I know you must go slowly. Only one or two know the true you. You might venture out a bit more.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 20) As you struggle to meet work demands you realize home and family life (past and present) is also struggling for your attention. You are pulled in two directions, seeking to maintain balance and quality and all you really want to do is run away somewhere. And even if you’ve already run away your thoughts and responsibilities traveled with you. Allow both realities their voices. Soon a compromise is reached. However, know this is a training.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21-Jan. 20) Someone older, wiser and a teacher/listener to you allows you to speak your mind and heart about dilemmas recently of concern. You also realize your need for true recognition and compensation. Everything routine goes into a tailspin. Seek legal advice if needed to ease your mind. Do not blame yourself for a past situation. Acts of God happen.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 21-Feb. 18) You know and remember the rules of retrogrades, yes? No big commitments, no signing of papers, no large purchases. Travel can be difficult and communication garbled. Contracts simply fall apart afterward and no one remembers previous conversations. Details are overlooked. However, it is a good time to tend to previous promises. Then you’re free.

PISCES (Feb.19-March 20) If a leader you may experience several rather unusual resistances to your leadership. It will be subtle and feel not quite tangible. However, if you think and ponder deeply your Pisces will grasp the situation clearly and make an appropriate response. Mercury retro times are Virgo times. For a Pisces this is good as it integrates your shadow self. Keep pondering.

Dancing In the Rain

District Attorney Bob Lee’s death in October stunned the Santa Cruz community, but he had battled cancer fiercely—and privately—for more than a decade. Now one of his closest friends reveals the remarkable inside story

Our Gifts - Fiery Sacrificial Lights to One Another

Wednesday is Christmas Eve, Hanukkah ends and the Moon is in Aquarius, calling for the new world to take shape at midnight. Thursday morning, the sun, at the Tropic of Capricorn, begins moving northward. The desire currents are stilled. A great benediction of spiritual force (Capricorn’s Rays 1, 3, 7) streams into Earth. Temple bells ring out. The heavens bend low; the Earth is lifted up to the Light. Angels and Archangels chant, “On Earth, peace, goodwill to all.” As these forces stream into the Earth they assume long swirling lines of light, in the likeness of the Madonna and Child. The holy child is born. Let our hearts be “impressed” with and hold this picture, especially because Christmas may be difficult this year. Christmas Day is void of course moon (v/c moon), which means we may feel somewhat disconnected from one another. It’s difficult to connect in a v/c moon. Try anyway. Mercury joins Pluto in Capricorn. Uh oh … we don’t bring up the past containing any dark and difficult issues. We are to attempt new ways of communicating—expressing aspirations and love for one another, replacing wounding, sadness, lostness, and hurts of the past. Play soothing music, pray together, have the intention for peace, harmony and goodwill. Don’t be surprised if things feel out of control and/or arguments arise. We remember, before a new harmony emerges, chaos and crisis come first to clear the air. We are to be the harmonizers. Christmas evening is more harmonious, less difficult, more of what Christmas should be— radiations of love, sharing, kindness, compassion and care. Sunday, Feast Day of the Holy Family, is surprising. Wednesday is New Year’s Eve, the last day of 2014. Taurus moon, a stabilizing energy, ushers in the New Year. Happy New Year, everyone! Peace to everyone. Let us realize we are gifts radiating diamond light to one another. Living sacrificial flames!

Best Bites of 2014

A look back at the year in good taste

What downtown business is good for both one-stop shopping and last-minute gifts?

The Homeless Garden Project store. Because it is a community effort and has really useful and beautiful things, and allows you to connect with a lot of folks who are doing great work in Santa Cruz. Miriam Greenberg, Santa Cruz, UCSC Professor

Vino Tabi Winery

One of Santa Cruz’s most happening areas to go wine tasting is in the westside’s Swift Street Courtyard complex. Ever since a group of about a dozen wineries got together and formed Surf City Vintners (SCV), the place has been a hive of activity, and a wine-tasting mecca. Adding to the mix is the lively Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing beer company—making Swift Street Courtyard a perfect spot for a glass of wine or a pitcher of ale.
