My hip had been broken and subsequently replaced, but finally crutch-free, I had come to celebrate with breakfast at De Laveaga Restaurant, home to the only sport I am still permitted to play.

Back at the Farm

Back at the FarmThere really was a farm at one time, farther up the road, which I remember for their enjoyable breakfasts. Thirty-five years later, now much smaller and located just south of Cabrillo College, The Farm still serves an abundant choice of fresh fare, made from scratch, in the middle of a chic boutique. I was surprised at the variety of tasteful gifts, from sweaters and jewelry, to cook books, cards and glassware.

Skov Winery is a fairly new kid on the block. But it’s certainly not new in the wine biz. Formerly called Roudon-Smith Winery, owners Annette and David Hunt decided on a complete turnaround, sold off the old winery and brought in a whole new label with a very different look. The Skov label reflects Annette’s Danish background—Skov is Danish for forest and it just so happens that their winery on Bean Creek Road in Scotts Valley is surrounded by redwoods. It also fits hand in glove with the whole Santa Cruz image—more redwoods in a heavily forested area.

Salmon and English muffins? Check. Lemony chicken—heavy on the lemons—that’s my unfortunate specialty. God-awful scrambled eggs, sweet potato hash gone wrong, dreary pasta sauce, burned meatballs. The list goes go on and on. Those who know me are distinctly aware that I’m a wretched cook. (And they have the stories to back it up.) In fact, I’ve been banned from cooking by everyone close to me. Leo Sun; Full Moon, Venus Retro in Leo; Saturn Direct

It’s a complex week of planetary movements, challenges, demands and callings. We’re in the time of the Leo Sun. Leo—fixed fire, gold, the heart, generous, strong, noble, the king/queen—needs appreciation and praise from everyone in order to move forward. During Leo we gain a greater sense of self-identification by recognizing our creativity. It’s therefore a perfect time for Venus retrograding in Leo. In Venus retrograde we review and re-assess values. Venus retro in Leo concerns our self as valuable, acknowledging talents, gifts, abilities and offerings. Friday, Venus re-enters Leo (29 degrees, a critical degree) continuing the retrograde to 14 degrees Leo on Sept. 6. Friday (Full Moon) is also the (8 degrees) Leo solar festival, Festival of the Future. Leo is the heart of the sun, the heart of all that matters. When attuned to this heart, we have understanding and inclusivity. The heart of the Lion is Mitra (think “Maitreya,” the coming World Teacher). Leo prepares humanity to receive divine love from subtle sources and later to radiate that love to the kingdoms. Sirius, Ray 2, where love originates, streams through Regulus (heart of Leo), into the heart of the sun (Ray 2) and into all hearts. The heart of Leo is Regulus. Joining Venus, the love underlying all of creation appears. Saturday is Sun/Neptune (confusion or devotion) with late night Saturn turning stationary direct. Ideas, plans and structures held long in abeyance (since March 14) slowly move forward.
