Love is the Drug

fm loversJarmusch’s vampire flick is ironically his warmest film

Jim Jarmusch’s first film in three years taps a commercial vein—vampires always sell, even given an all-mood, little-plot film, however lambently shot by Yorick Le Saux. Only Lovers Left Alive is an ultimately enrapturing love story, set on the border of gentility and decadence.

The lovers are introduced in a matched set of circling shots from the ceiling: one black-clad male Adam (Tom Hiddleston) with black peekaboo hair; the other, Eve, a nigh-albino (Tilda Swinton) laid out pale and fair in a Slavic caftan. Fascinated with idlers and ramblers throughout his career, Jarmusch finds a pair too inert even to die.

The two have been missing each other. Eve leaves her home in Tangier and comes to Detroit where Adam is a nocturnal, reclusive musician, dwelling in a shuttered house, pestered by fans who ring his doorbell. Adam has an intermediary with the world of “zombies,” as he calls humans.

Only Lovers is a romanticized version of the drug life, overlaid on a vampire romance; the relationship between Adam and his human assistant, Ian (Anton Yelchin), is like the relationship between a dealer and his best customer. It’s friendly enough, but it’s a friendship that doesn’t go that thick or deep. Adam requires the finest vintage guitars and old vinyl. One evening, he pays Ian to find a bullet tipped with the densest hardwood: “It’s for an, er, project. An art project.” The need for a weapon signals the arrival of the film’s serious trouble-maker: Eve’s Lilithian sister Ava (Mia Wasikowska).

Even before the fangs show in the half-smiles, the movie luxuriates in the charm of good-looking actors doing very little. Wasikowska’s previously undemonstrated capacity for mischief and wiggliness enlivens the movie when it begins to get static, in the same way that the unwanted Hungarian niece upended the characters’ lives in Stranger Than Paradise. This is Jarmusch’s warmest work. United, our lovers drive, without fear, all night in Detroit, looking at the wanton destruction. They see the cars parked in the Michigan Theater’s shell, which is right up there with stabling horses in the Vatican. Yet Adam prophesizes the city’s resurrection, since it is rich with water in a world ever-poorer of it. Strange to see a vampire movie arguing that the sun also rises.

Not real true
written by Louise Rosenberg, May 01, 2014
Jim Jarmusch did not jump on the Vamp bandwagon. He had been trying to fund this film for 7 or 8 years before it was made. Also stylistically this is nothing like any of the other trash vamp movies or TV shows. This is a beautiful love story between the the two long times lovers and for the the great art and science humans have created.

The resurection note was playes by the Eve and not Adam.

Gemini Festival of Goodwill, World Invocation Day

This entire week is a preparation by the New Group of World Servers (NGWS) for the June full moon (Tuesday) and to welcome the Forces of Reconstruction, great outer planetary forces streaming into the Earth at the Gemini Solar Festival. The Gemini Festival at the June full moon is called the Festival of Goodwill and World Invocation Day (recitation of the Great Invocation, the mantram of direction for humanity, hourly around the world). During the (12 degrees) Gemini festival, the Wesak blessing of the will-to-good is released and radiated (Gemini distributes) to humanity. When the will-to-good is received, humanity is then able to radiate goodwill to each other and to the kingdoms. The Gemini Festival is the third of the Three Spring Festivals (triangle of Force), setting the spiritual template and resources for Earth for the rest of the year (‘til next spring). This festival recognizes the true spirit of humanity—aspiring toward and seeking the will of God, dedicated to right human relation. At the full moon, the Divine nature of humanity is recognized. Christ stands with humanity, leader of his people, “the Eldest in a great family of brothers” (Romans VIII, 29.) Each year at the Gemini festival, Christ preaches the last sermon of Buddha, His brother, a sermon calling forth human and spiritual unity, represented by an outflow of love (work of the Christ) and wisdom (work of the Buddha). The forces of reconstruction stream in during the Festival, ushering in an era of pronounced creative activity, rebuilding the tangible world on new creative lines. This necessitates the total destruction of the old forms no longer useful for the new world era. Everyone is invited. Join us everyone for this Festival of Goodwill by reciting the Great Invocation.
