On a Roll

dining1Sam's Chowder House brings New England-style seafood to Half Moon Bay
Perched on a cliff just south of Pillar Point Harbor, eco-friendly Sam's Chowder House offers sensational views and a respect for seafood that allows its flavors to shine. Voted Best Waterfront Dining last year by SF Gate's readership, its award-winning Executive Chef and partner Lewis Rossman seeks sustainable and local ingredients for his seasonal menus.

At Sam's the charcuterie, including cured salmon, is house-made, as are the dressings, pasta and sauces. Lobster clambakes are available for private parties with optional margarita and raw oyster bars, but there's also a "Party in a Pot"—a lobster clambake you can cook at home. The kids menu offers organic soft-serve ice cream, and follows the "Kids Healthy Choices" program.

The parking lots were full for a Sunday lunch, and despite the chill of overcast skies, jacketed patrons enjoyed live music on the deck. Without reservations we felt lucky to snag the last tall table in the tightly-packed bar. As a warm-up, the cup of rich New England Clam Chowder ($6.25) was actually a good-sized bowl, and wonderfully flavored with plenty of smoky bacon.

Four Blue Crab Cakes ($12.50), like golden golf balls with a crisp crust were moist in the middle; just crab with bits of celery, onion and herbs. On the side was a little salad of red and yellow bell peppers with fennel and cucumber in light vinaigrette.

The Beet Salad ($8.95) featured bitter greens and frilly frisée chicory topped with a large quartered strawberry, soft crumbles of feta cheese, and chilled cubes of saccharine golden beets. The outstanding dressing was based on a purée of roasted pistachios.

Phil Lempert, food editor of NBC's Today Show named Sam's Lobster Roll ($19.95) one of the five best sandwiches in America. Instead of a traditional hot dog roll, Sam's bread has a lovely fluffy texture reminiscent of brioche. Toasted and buttered, it was overflowing with large chunks of sweet lobster claw.

Desserts, too, are house-made, and Sam's Key Lime Pie ($7) is a local favorite. The sugary graham cracker crust was filled with rich, thick and tart custard the color of flan and topped with fluffy sweetened egg white meringue, lime slices, and powdered sugar.

Sam's Chowder House, 4210 North Cabrillo Highway (Highway 1), Half Moon Bay, (650)712-0245. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner daily from 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Visit samschowderhouse.com.

'Tis the season for jumping on airplanes. Or waiting endlessly for them as the case may be, which might make you a little hungry. Check out airportdining.net, a yelp-like site for the jet set. At Chicago O'Hare, the cheese and caramel popcorn is said to be addictive. In Austin, enjoy a locally-brewed Shiner Bock with a Brisket Sandwich at The Salt Lick. And in San Francisco's International terminal, experience a traditional Japanese breakfast at Tomokazu. The site is relatively new, so during your travels, you could be one of the charter reviewers.

Two Fish Bound by a Golden Cord

Until March 20, (Spring Equinox), Earth and her kingdoms (mineral, plant, animal, human) experience the influence of Pisces, sign of the World Savior. Whereas the task of Aquarius is as world server, the Pisces task is saving the world—tasks given to the two fishes. Pisces never really enters matter, and as the last sign of the zodiac includes all the signs. During Pisces, having gathered all the gifts of the previous 11 signs, it is a good time to prepare for new initiating plans when Aries (sign of beginnings) begins. No wonder Pisces, like Scorpio, is so difficult (both are ruled by Pluto, planet of death, new life, regeneration, transformations). Both signs (with Scorpio drowning in dark and deep waters) find life on Earth a hardship, disorienting (from the spiritual perspective), at times feeling betrayed. Life is a paradox, especially for Pisces. Each zodiacal sign represents and distributes a different phase and facet (12) of the Soul’s diamond light, Pisces is the “Light of Life itself, ending forever the darkness of matter.” It takes two fish to complete this work (creating eventually an extraordinary human being). One fish turned toward the material world (in order to understand matter), the other fish toward the heavenly world. Around the two fish is a silvery cord binding them together. The two fish are forever bound until all of humanity is redeemed (lifted up into the Light). This is the dedication of all world saviors (Buddha, Christ, the NGWS). Thus the sacrifice and suffering experienced by Pisces. Knowing these things about Pisces, let us help them all we can. Sometimes all of humanity is Pisces.
