Rock the Vote

blogBeat TessDunn16-year-old singer Tess Dunn asks Santa Cruz to make her dream come true
Santa Cruz is on a roll these days—first, James Durbin ranked fourth on “American Idol,” then Chris Rene began his meteoric rise on “The X Factor,” and now, 16-year-old Tess Dunn is one week and a day away from having her music video “Shame to See” played during 99.7’s Triple Ho Show 2.0 on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at HP Pavilion.

But, she needs your help. One of 12 contestants in 99.7’s Local Video Battle, Dunn is counting on the community to help make her dream come true. So far, she is leading the polls by a landslide, with 29,476 votes and counting. Her closest competitor has 7,269 votes.

She may have the lead, but, she admits in an email blast to her supporters, “I don’t take anything for granted … this is a huge deal for me!”

The local singer/songwriter and three-time Vans Warped Tour veteran has wooed Santa Cruz since she first stepped onstage at age 12. Since then, her fan base has grown exponentially with the release of her debut album, 2009’s Darling Just Walk.

Though living with cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and epilepsy, Dunn hasn’t let her health slow her down. Instead, her radiant personality and inspiring pop-punk hits have made her an important artist to watch.

Just last month, Dunn recorded her second EP with Ari Shine and Noah Shain at White Buffalo Studios in Los Angeles, and now she hopes that Santa Cruzans will continue to show their support and vote for “Shame to See.”

Want to help bring her music video into the winner’s circle? Click on the link below—you don’t have to create an account, log-in, or anything—select Dunn’s video and click “vote.” The voting period ends on Friday, Dec. 9 at midnight, so starting today, you have nine opportunities to cast your vote (one per day).

Show your Santa Cruz pride. Vote Tess Dunn!

Santa Cruz Restaurant Week

A huge part of Santa Cruz Restaurant Week has always been about offering a great dining experience for an affordable price. For some locals, the $25 flat-rate cost has provided the opportunity (or the excuse!) to try new spots, and indulge in Santa Cruz fine dining in a way they might have thought too pricey before.

Scorpio Sun, New Moon Eclipse, Mercury Direct

The Sun enters Scorpio’s mysteries Thursday under a new moon and partial solar eclipse (something essential has come to an end, its purpose completed). In Scorpio we harbor secrets, are devoted to something deep, dark and hidden. Sometimes it’s ourselves. We can bring great suspect to our assessment of others. Scorpio is the scorpion, the serpent and the eagle—three levels of development. As the serpent we take shelter in our beliefs. Sometimes we bite (or sting). The eagle vanquishes old beliefs through its sharp intellect, soaring high in the air, seeking to understand through perspective. Understanding releases us from the bondage of fear. The eagle is like the mother soothing feelings of mistrust, offering protection. Knowledge does this, too.
