Red Alert

Red Alert

What is the hot, or should I say haute, accessory heating up the runways for fall around the globe? Red lips. From New York, to Paris, to Milan and beyond, designers are pairing their new creations with crimson lips meant to make a statement. These lips are not for you if you want to demurely blend into the background. They are stand out, get noticed in a crowd lips. There really is a shade for everyone, so get yourself to your favorite makeup counter—may I suggest Farmacy downtown or Beauty 360 on the Westside—and pucker up. If it’s the crème de la crème that you prefer, you simply must try Chanel’s new Rouge Allure Lacque lip lacquer in Dragon. This lovely lip lacquer is a creamy, glossy and dramatic shade of red that is neither too orange nor too blue; in other words Goldilocks, this shade is just right. Surprisingly, it also has staying power and will last through your morning latte and on to lunch. Even if your runway is the walk from your office to the water-cooler, remember to work those red lips, because all eyes will be on you.

Obsessed Over Oxfords

Obsessed Over Oxfords

If you don’t yet know, oxfords are going to be everywhere this season—in all shapes and styles. Grey, black, two-tone spectators, wedges, cut outs, leopard print, granny style, and so on. And frankly, you really can’t go wrong with them. They’re a classic style that’s been updated for 2010 (and beyond). Pair them with baggy boyfriend jeans (no socks, please); create a slick silhouette by using them to complement a pair of skinny jeans; wear them with a short skirt and tights; try the streamlined spectator version, or even the bootie take on oxfords.

Lovely Leather

Lovely Leather

We’ve blogged about Nuala leather products in the past, but recently, Obsessive Beauty had a glimpse at some of the gorgeous work that Terry McInerney has been creating as of late, and her new line of leather accessories has us drooling. McInerney, a local mom in Santa Cruz, has been cutting and sewing together a new batch of inspired purses, messenger bags and more. What particularly caught our eye are her new wallets ($55)—with simple studded hardware and pockets that will fit your debit card, driver’s license and much more; they come in black or a chestnut color and are vastly unique. Another captivating item of McInerney’s are her leather cuffs, which have a vintage broach embedded on them ($42)—they offer a splash of rough femininity to any outfit. McInerney is also responsible for the recent brouhaha over a certain leather cuff watch that she recently created. A chunky leather band wraps around your wrist, with a classic watch face attached to it. It fits in perfectly with the sturdy, military-inspired looks that were featured on the runways. Perfect for fall. (These can also be custom-ordered.) Visit etsy.com/shop/nualaleather to make an inquiry, or find Nuala leather on Facebook.

Tread Tightly

Tread TightlyWant to know one of the secrets to fall style? Black tights. This perennial staple is truly a wonder of the fashion world. Whether you're wearing a jewel toned mini to cocktail hour, a tweed pencil skirt to the office or you're simply schlepping around downtown in your comfiest weekend dress and boots, black tights gently squeeze your curves in all the right places and make your gams look ultra glam. The best part is that these hip pin covers can be purchased on the cheap by an all-purpose brand like Hue. Then there's Spanx, the mid range, suck-you-in variety that all the celebs swear by. And finally, if you want to indulge in the gold standard of legwear, grab a pair by luxe Austrian company Wolford. Sure it's hot right now, but stock up on black tights so you can don a pair the first day the thermometer dips below 70.

Hue and Spanx are available at Sockshop Santa Cruz, 1515 Pacific Ave., 429-6101. Wolford tights can be purchased at wolfordshop.com.

Field Work

Santa Cruz Mountain winemakers explain how the harvest works, and what kind of wine to expect from this year's crop

Libra's Two Choices

Libra (our last week) is the sign of creating right relations and values. In Libra we are asked to choose how to be, our identity in the world. We can maintain a hermetic sealed-off attitude (my life, my work, my money, etc.) or we can gain knowledge of world events and learn more about those in need. Libra is a group sign—self with others. Here are some events occurring in our world this week concerning food, poverty, spirituality, values and global realities. The UN (a spiritual experiment) each month places a “light” upon world problems. This week a light shines on Rural Women, Farms, Food & Poverty. Before we choose to respond we must have knowledge. “So we can each do our part.” Oct. 15 - International Day of Rural Women (unrecognized with few resources); Oct. 16 - World Food Day & Family Farming: Feeding the World, Caring for the Earth; Oct. 17 - Eradication of Poverty Day (international). During the month of Libra (with Saturn exalted), we pause, contemplate and assess what it is we know, don’t know, and need to know. Libra receives and distributes Ray 3 of divine intelligence, right relations, right choice and right economy (Venus). Use your intelligence “tips the Libran scales” in terms of being able to see and then choose between the two paths Libra offers (return to the past or step forward into Scorpio’s Discipleship). Libra (the oscillating light) prepares us for the great tests and conflicts in Scorpio. In Libra we are subtly tested as we learn the nature of polarized energies (s/he loves me, s/he loves me not). In Libra we learn more about ourselves through others. Libra’s Ray 3 asks us to become more adaptable and skillful. And then we are to teach each other what we know. In Libra, we all become teachers. In all these ways love is cultivated.
