Obsessive Beauty Hits the Big Apple

blog_beauty11Call it fate, luck or chance that my fellow Obsessive Beauty writer Christa Martin and I happened to be in New York City at the same time. Our paths would only cross there by one day however, so it was imperative that we cram as much shopping as possible into a single 24-hour period. With much pre-planning and a trusty iPhone to guide us, we navigated the world class shopping streets of SoHo like native New Yorkers.

If you are on a budget, do not by any means walk into Flying A. This retro chic clothing boutique (169 Spring St.) is filled to the brim with both new and vintage items that look like something out of your mom’s high school yearbook. Colorful scarves, buttery leather bags, 50s style dresses and a hodgepodge of accessories make Flying A a true gift from the shopping gods. The famed Japanese brand Muji (455 Broadway) has gained a cult-like following for a reason. Walk into the SoHo store and find everything from office supplies, kitchen utensils and unbelievably soft cotton tees arranged with military-like precision. The store exudes a modern art museum aura, because each item purveyed is streamlined and simple—no frills here. Add to that the low, Ikea like prices and Muji just might become your new favorite store.
blog_beauty2For those that have traveled across the pond, you may have heard of the UKs secret fashion weapon known as TopShop (478 Broadway). The brand recently opened a store stateside, to the delight of many American fashionistas—including yours truly. Four stories of trends awaited and we immediately examined every floor with hawk like intensity. Sort of a British version of Forever 21, TopShop specializes in hot off the runway trends at wallet-friendly prices. The season’s pickings were a bit too 1980s for us, but there were some Kate Moss designed dresses and tanks made of ethereal fabrics that we would have been happy to snap up. Stay tuned for more Obsessive Beauty, NYC style!

Leo Sun; Full Moon, Venus Retro in Leo; Saturn Direct

It’s a complex week of planetary movements, challenges, demands and callings. We’re in the time of the Leo Sun. Leo—fixed fire, gold, the heart, generous, strong, noble, the king/queen—needs appreciation and praise from everyone in order to move forward. During Leo we gain a greater sense of self-identification by recognizing our creativity. It’s therefore a perfect time for Venus retrograding in Leo. In Venus retrograde we review and re-assess values. Venus retro in Leo concerns our self as valuable, acknowledging talents, gifts, abilities and offerings. Friday, Venus re-enters Leo (29 degrees, a critical degree) continuing the retrograde to 14 degrees Leo on Sept. 6. Friday (Full Moon) is also the (8 degrees) Leo solar festival, Festival of the Future. Leo is the heart of the sun, the heart of all that matters. When attuned to this heart, we have understanding and inclusivity. The heart of the Lion is Mitra (think “Maitreya,” the coming World Teacher). Leo prepares humanity to receive divine love from subtle sources and later to radiate that love to the kingdoms. Sirius, Ray 2, where love originates, streams through Regulus (heart of Leo), into the heart of the sun (Ray 2) and into all hearts. The heart of Leo is Regulus. Joining Venus, the love underlying all of creation appears. Saturday is Sun/Neptune (confusion or devotion) with late night Saturn turning stationary direct. Ideas, plans and structures held long in abeyance (since March 14) slowly move forward. (Read more on Leo and the week at nightlightnews.org and Risa D’Angeles’ Facebook page, accessed through my website.)

A much-anticipated annual event at Bargetto Winery is the release of their very special La Vita red wine. June 7 was the day to be heralded this year, and I happily squeezed my car into their overloaded car park in eager anticipation of tasting the new La Vita nectar.
