Win It and Wear It—New Contest

Blog_obsessivebWith the enormous success of this year’s Fashion Issue and GT’s first ever Win It and Wear It Contest, the writers of Obsessive Beauty have decided to launch a weekly fashion giveaway. You can score free fashionable items that were featured in the Fashion Issue. The prizes for this week’s first contest include a ring by August Mae Designs and a pair of luxurious lace panties from Manu.

Blog_ObsessivebpicBoth designs were featured in this year’s Fashion Issue. The vintage/romantic cocktail rings of August Mae Designs are making a huge splash at local retailer Stripe, with fashionistas flocking into the store in hopes of finding a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry from designers Jan Reehm and Sarah York. Likewise, Manu lingerie, created by Manuka Sanyal, has a large following with her high-end pajamas, underwear, and more items, sold online and at Cameron Marks. Actress Olivia Wilde of the television show, House, is a fan of the lingerie line.

Here’s how the contest works: Leave a comment here on this blog and tell us about something in fashion that you’re obsessed with. The contest begins Aug. 18 and ends on Tuesday, Aug. 24. Winners are announced at the Obsessive Beauty blog on Wednesday, Aug. 25.

For more information about August Mae Designs, visit Stripe, 107 Walnut Ave., Santa Cruz, 421-9252, stripedesigngroup.com, or etsy.com/shop/augustmaedesigns. To learn more about Manu, visit manukasanyal.com, or check out Cameron Marks, 402 Ingalls St., No. 7, Santa Cruz, 458-3080, cameronmarks.com

I've never seen a season so versatile with jewelry as this season. You'll see embellishments, and leathers combined with jewels and chains. The designs are more artistic then what's usually out there, leaving me excited for this fall, and knowing Santa Cruz offers a variety of these things makes it even better!

Somebody's Sister

Only recently did I discover the pleasure of wearing sexy undergarments...just for me. So even at work when I'm grunting over someone's groceries, in a grimy pair of jeans and an even grimier work shirt, I can at least have the pleasure of knowing I look damn sexy underneath all of it! Then I'd go home, strip down to my Manu lingerie, slip on my August Mae cocktail ring, and relax whilst reading the latest Obsessive Beauty blog post!

I was drawn to August Mae's button-design rings for very sentimental reasons. My Grandmother had a collection of vintage buttons that I used to play with as a child! AND, I absolutely LOVE rings!

Reflecting Glass

Composer Philip Glass’ first trip to Big Sur was by motorcycle; little did he know that he’d establish a music festival there six decades later.

Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, occurs this year during Libra, the sign of creating right relations with all aspects life and with earth’s kingdoms. We contemplate (the Libra meditation) forgiveness, which means, “to give for another.” Forgiveness is not pardon. It’s a sacrifice (fire in the heart, giving from the heart). Forgiveness is giving up for the good of the other. This is the law of evolution (the path of return).

Best of Santa Cruz County

The 2013 Santa Cruz County Readers' Poll and Critics’ Picks It’s our biggest issue of the year, and in it, your votes—more than 6,500 of them—determined the winners of The Best of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll. New to the long list of local restaurants, shops and other notables that captured your interest: Best Beer Selection, Best Locally Owned Business, Best Customer Service and Best Marijuana Dispensary. In the meantime, many readers were ever so chatty online about potential new categories. Some of the suggestions that stood out: Best Teen Program and Best Web Design/Designer. But what about: Dog Park, Church, Hotel, Local Farm, Therapist (I second that!) or Sports Bar—not to be confused with Bra. Our favorite suggestion: Best Act of Kindness—one reader noted Café Gratitude and the free meals it offered to the Santa Cruz Police Department in the aftermath of recent crimes. Perhaps some of these can be woven into next year’s ballot, so stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy the following pages and take note of our Critics’ Picks, too, beginning on page 91. A big thanks for voting—and for reading—and an even bigger congratulations to all of the winners. Enjoy.  -Greg Archer, EditorBest of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll INDEX

Apricot Wine for Dessert

Thomas Kruse Winery, a participant in the new Santa Clara Wine Trail, has been around for a long time—since 1971, to be exact. When our little group arrived to try some wine at the Kruses’ low-key tasting room, Thomas Kruse and his wife Karen were there to greet us. Theirs is a small operation, and they’re proud to offer quality wine at affordable prices. “Because we are small and low-tech, it’s easy to relate to the whole winemaking process,” says Karen—and the Kruses take pride in making wine “just like it has been made for centuries.”
