Win It and Wear It—Jan. 18

Winners announced:

Earrings: Elizabeth

Shirt: Caroline

**Thanks for entering the contest and check back for more contests in a few weeks.**

January kicks off a series of fashionable firsts for the Obsessive Beauty blog. We’re hosting our first Win It and Wear It contest for the new year. Enter today and leave a comment at this blog telling us about something that you’re obsessed with in fashion or beauty. Winners will be announced on Monday, Jan. 17.

For this contest, we’re partnering up with Saffron and Genevieve, a lifestyle store in Santa Cruz to give away a pair of silver and gold earrings handmade by YedOmi of Portland, retailing for $45. Visit for more information about the store.

Also this week, we’re giving away a cotton top created by SUST and sold by, a new, local online retailer spearheaded by Deirdre Holbrook. All of the stunning clothes at have a “green” emphasis of some sort, and look like the types of items that you’d find in your favorite store—romantic, fashion forward, feminine—the types of garments that make you feel beautiful. Hugging the hips and waist and loosening up to a boatneck, the T-shirt is a must have. It retails for $68.

And if you like what you’ve seen here in this week’s contest, swing by Saffron and Genevieve for a wider selection, as the store is teaming up Holbrook to offer a pop-up shop featuring items from starting Jan. 14 and going through March. There, fashionistas will be able to find some of the lust-worthy finds (in person) from, including local designers Manu Lingerie and Lina Rennell, and some of our personal favorite designers Juleselin, Sofie Olgaard, and Greenbees boots. Enjoy tea, treats, cocktails and a viewing party all day on Friday, Jan. 14 at Saffron and Genevieve, 910b, Soquel Ave., Santa Cruz. (Tea from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., cocktail party from 5 to 9 p.m.) For more information, visit, or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

At the moment I'm obsessed with the idea of shopping, maybe because I don't have much time to actually go out there and do it. If I could go on a little spree, I'd definitely be on the hunt for boots, the end of season sales are calling my name and I need a brown pair of boots stat!

Saffron and Genevieve is definitely one of the coolest things about Santa Cruz. The way the owner, Scarlett, seamlessly blends gorgeous design and home decor with deliciously unusual hand-made items and fine art just takes the whole town up a notch. Can't wait to check out the Oak and Co. items!

I don't really follow trends, so can't speak to what I like the most in current fashion or beauty. In both clothing and jewelry, the things I crave are carefully pared down design, beautiful materials and textures, and a sense of the handmade.

Wow, beautiful earrings! Hopefully, I'll be able to stop by the shop this Friday. The clothes look amazing!

Mercury Direct in Libra, Columbus Day, Libra New Moon

Mercury completes its retrograde Friday, poised stationary direct Friday evening at zero degrees Libra. Mercury begins its journey through Libra once again, completing its retrograde shadow Oct. 12. Things should be a bit less complicated by then. Daily life works better, plans move forward, large purchases can be made, and communication eases. Everything on hold during the retrograde is slowly released. Since we eliminated all thoughts and ideas no longer needed (the purpose of Mercury’s retrograde) during the retrograde, we can now gather new information—until the next retrograde occurs on Jan. 5, 2016 (1.3 degrees Aquarius), retrograding back to 15 degrees Capricorn on Jan. 25. It’s good to know beforehand when Mercury will retrograde next—Jan. 5, the day before Epiphany. On Monday is Columbus Day, when the sailor from Genoa arrived in the new lands (Americas), Oct. 12, 1492. This discovery by Columbus was the first encounter of Europeans with Native Americans. Other names for this day are “Discovery Day, Day of the Americas, Cultural Diversity Day, Indigenous People’s Day, and Dia de la Raza.” Italian communities especially celebrate this day. Oct. 12 is also Thanksgiving Day in Canada. Monday is also the (19 degrees) Libra new moon festival. Libra’s keynote while building the personality is, “Let choice be made.” Libra is the sign of making life choices. Often under great tension of opposing forces seeking harmony and balance. There is a battle between our lower (personality) and higher selves (soul). We are tested and called to cultivate right judgment and love. When we align with the will-to-good, right choice, then right judgment and love/wisdom come forth. Our tasks in Libra.
