blog_beauty1

Winners announced:

Earrings: Elizabeth

Shirt: Caroline

**Thanks for entering the contest and check back for more contests in a few weeks.**

January kicks off a series of fashionable firsts for the Obsessive Beauty blog. We’re hosting our first Win It and Wear It contest for the new year. Enter today and leave a comment at this blog telling us about something that you’re obsessed with in fashion or beauty. Winners will be announced on Monday, Jan. 17.

For this contest, we’re partnering up with Saffron and Genevieve, a lifestyle store in Santa Cruz to give away a pair of silver and gold earrings handmade by YedOmi of Portland, retailing for $45. Visit Saffronandgenevieve.com for more information about the store.

Also this week, we’re giving away a cotton top created by SUST and sold by oakandco.com, a new, local online retailer spearheaded by Deirdre Holbrook. All of the stunning clothes at blog_beauty2oakandco.com have a “green” emphasis of some sort, and look like the types of items that you’d find in your favorite store—romantic, fashion forward, feminine—the types of garments that make you feel beautiful. Hugging the hips and waist and loosening up to a boatneck, the T-shirt is a must have. It retails for $68.

And if you like what you’ve seen here in this week’s contest, swing by Saffron and Genevieve for a wider selection, as the store is teaming up Holbrook to offer a pop-up shop featuring items from oakandco.com starting Jan. 14 and going through March. There, fashionistas will be able to find some of the lust-worthy finds (in person) from oakandco.com, including local designers Manu Lingerie and Lina Rennell, and some of our personal favorite designers Juleselin, Sofie Olgaard, and Greenbees boots. Enjoy tea, treats, cocktails and a viewing party all day on Friday, Jan. 14 at Saffron and Genevieve, 910b, Soquel Ave., Santa Cruz. (Tea from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., cocktail party from 5 to 9 p.m.) For more information, visit saffronandgenevieve.com, oakandco.com or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Saffron and Genevieve is definitely one of the coolest things about Santa Cruz. The way the owner, Scarlett, seamlessly blends gorgeous design and home decor with deliciously unusual hand-made items and fine art just takes the whole town up a notch. Can't wait to check out the Oak and Co. items!

the artfully made and a luxury to wear
written by Giselle Gautreau, January 10, 2011
I don't really follow trends, so can't speak to what I like the most in current fashion or beauty. In both clothing and jewelry, the things I crave are carefully pared down design, beautiful materials and textures, and a sense of the handmade.

We Can Rebuild You

A look back at how downtown Santa Cruz recovered from the 1989 earthquake

International Earth Day—Mother Earth Day

Every April 22, humanity celebrates International Mother Earth Day and Earth Day. As more than a billion people participate in Earth Day activities every year, Earth Day has become the world’s largest civic observance. The massive concern to build right relations between humanity and the living being we call Earth is evidence of humanity’s love of the Mother. In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed April 22 International Mother Earth Day, with a significant resolution affirming “the interdependence existing among human beings, other living species (the kingdoms—mineral, plant, animal and human) and the planet itself, the Earth which we all inhabit.” The Earth is our home. Celebrating Earth Day helps us define new emerging processes (economic, social, political) focused on the well-being of the kingdoms. Through these, humanity seeks to raise the quality of life, foster equality and begin to establish right relations with the Earth. We dedicate ourselves to bringing forth balance and a relationship of harmony with all of nature. Learn about planting a billion trees (the Canopy Project); participate in 1.5 billion acts of green. Disassociation (toward Earth) is no longer viable. We lose our connection to life itself. Participation is viable—an anchor, refuge and service for all of life on Earth. Visit earthday.org; harmonywithnatureun.org; and un.org/en/events/motherearthday for more information. From Farmers Almanac, “On Earth Day, enjoy the tonic of fresh air, contact with the soil, companionship with nature! Go barefooted. Walk through woods, find wildflowers and green moss. Remain outside, no matter the weather!” Nature, Earth’s most balanced kingdom, heals us. The New Group of World Servers is preparing for the May 3 Wesak Buddha Taurus solar festival. We prepare through asking for and offering forgiveness. Forgiveness purifies and like nature, heals.
