A Sewing License

blog_beauty2“Most pattern publishers categorically deny anyone the right to sell items made from their designs,” says oliverands.com, a popular fashion design website featuring children’s clothes and sewing patterns. What does this mean? In essence: You cannot make an article of clothing from a pattern and sell it for profit. Hear that, seamstresses? It’s illegal. Think copyright law. I know someone who was planning on doing this very thing. I hope she reads the blog and realizes she can’t do that before she starts selling stuff and a lawsuit comes her way. And when you think about it, it actually makes sense. This is artistic property here—patterns are made by someone for someone else to make something, not make money off of. And so, just like using a song in your film, you have to get a license to use a pattern. The adorable children’s clothing company, Oliver + S, has done just that as a way to reach out to people who would like to sew garments for others. Now, keep in mind this is not a mass production business offering, it’s for small sales. For a $6 fee you can buy a license and you are registered on the oliverands.com website as a Custom or Readymade Boutique Sewer. Of course, you can avoid all of this if you design your own patterns, but for novice sewers, this isn’t an option until their skills are honed. Even still, regardless of skill level, Oliver + S offers some adorable patterns, so why not stick to the finest?  Visit oliverands.com for more information.

A Year of Creative Self-Expression

Wednesday, after a year in Cancer’s nourishing waters, Jupiter enters fiery Leo. Next Tuesday, the sun joins Jupiter in Leo. Leo is the sign of the three fires of life, of seeking our individuality, our gifts and talents. Life for the next year will be quite dramatic, expressive, creative and generous. Jupiter, the heart of Aquarius, is the planet of expansion and truth, distributing Ray 2 of Love and Wisdom.

We continue to be under the influence of Cancer (Ray 3, sign of liberty and freedom). Cancer is the gate through which spirit enters matter. Cancer grows new life in its warm waters. Cancer is the crab living in water and on land. Cancer represents our home, family, upbringing, how we nurture and are nurtured. Cancer is our conditioning, influencing all life choices.

Best of Santa Cruz County

The 2013 Santa Cruz County Readers' Poll and Critics’ Picks It’s our biggest issue of the year, and in it, your votes—more than 6,500 of them—determined the winners of The Best of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll. New to the long list of local restaurants, shops and other notables that captured your interest: Best Beer Selection, Best Locally Owned Business, Best Customer Service and Best Marijuana Dispensary. In the meantime, many readers were ever so chatty online about potential new categories. Some of the suggestions that stood out: Best Teen Program and Best Web Design/Designer. But what about: Dog Park, Church, Hotel, Local Farm, Therapist (I second that!) or Sports Bar—not to be confused with Bra. Our favorite suggestion: Best Act of Kindness—one reader noted Café Gratitude and the free meals it offered to the Santa Cruz Police Department in the aftermath of recent crimes. Perhaps some of these can be woven into next year’s ballot, so stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy the following pages and take note of our Critics’ Picks, too, beginning on page 91. A big thanks for voting—and for reading—and an even bigger congratulations to all of the winners. Enjoy.  -Greg Archer, EditorBest of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll INDEX

Loma Prieta’s Pinotage

Although drinking alone is not half as much fun as drinking with others, after a busy day of dashing around, I came home and poured myself a glass or two of Loma Prieta’s Pinotage 2010 (saving a bit for my husband). There’s something about taking that first sip of a worthy wine that gives one an all-over glow.
