Feathers, Henna, Braids—Oh My!

braidLuscious gears up for a pre-Burning Man event

The gates to Black Rock City open in less than three days, which means that many Playa-goers will be spending the weekend making final supply runs, gluing that last bit of fur to whatever doesn’t already have some, and trying to cram their costumes into dusty bins. But there is another last-minute stop I suggest making before hitting the road—and it’s the subject of our final installment in the Burning Man fashion countdown.

Luscious, a festival-friendly shop in Downtown Santa Cruz, will host a henna and feather hair extension event on Sunday, Aug. 28 from 1 to 5 p.m. It’s the perfect opportunity to get those final adornments before heading to the Playa: Featherluxe Feather Hair Extensions will be there, as they often are on Sunday afternoons, with an assortment of colorful feather hair extensions to help you spice up your locks. Prices range from $10 for a single long feather to $25 for a bundle of four to five feathers. The even funkier “native braids” (see picture) range from $30 to $40. Featherluxe West Coast Director Ashlé Nouveau says they will also be offering a “Creative FeatherLight Design Package,” which costs $60 to $200 for either a full head of half-head of single, double and bundled feathers. These vibrant hair decorations last for one to three months and are washable, making them the perfect built-in Playa hairstyle.

Julia Patterson, of Miho Hana Art, will be on site giving henna tattoos that start at $10. These intricate, all-natural body designs last one to four weeks, and will solidify your Playa-readiness. While you’re there, check out Luscious’ tempting selection of Burning Man-worthy clothes and locally-made hats and jewelry. You’ll hit the road feeling oh-so-Playa-pretty.

The event will take place at Luscious, 121 Walnut Ave., Santa Cruz, on Sunday, Aug. 28 from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information about Featherluxe Feather Hair Extensions visit featherluxewestcoast.com.

Instead of glamorizing this feather fad, perhaps people should be informed that these birds are being bred and raised simply for their feathers. The poor birds are then simply killed...disposed of. All in the name of a fashion fad. Shame on all of us....

Best of Santa Cruz 2015

In 40 years of publishing, Good Times has seen a lot of “bests.”

Spring Triangle: Three Spring Festivals—Aries, Taurus, Gemini

The Spring signs Aries, Taurus and Gemini constitute a triangle of force that sets the template for the nine signs that follow and the template for the entire year (Spring 2015 - Spring 2016) ahead. Aries initiates new ideas, Taurus stabilizes the new thinking of Aries and Gemini takes the initiating stabilized ideas of Aries/Taurus and disperses them to all of humanity. It is in this way that humanity learns new things, with the help of Mercury, the messenger. As Spring unfolds, three elements emerge: the Fire of Aries (initiating new ideas), the Earth of Taurus (anchoring the ideas of God through Mercury) and the Air of communicating Gemini. These three signs/elements are the Three Spring Festivals. They are the “triangle of force” forming the template (patterns) of energy for the upcoming new year. After these three we then have the soothing, calming, warming, nurturing and tending waters of the mother (Cancer). Cancer initiates our next season under the hot suns of summer. Planets, stars and signs create the Temple of Light directing humanity towards all things new. March 29 is Palm Sunday, when the Christ, World Teacher, was led into Jerusalem (City of Peace) on a donkey (humility). Palms waving above His head, signified recognition of the Christ’s divinity. Palm Sunday is the Sunday before the Easter (Resurrection Festival). Palm Sunday begins Holy Week, the week of capture, imprisonment, passion, sacrifice, crucifixion, death and resurrection of the christ. All events in the Christ’s life represent events (initiations) that humanity experiences through many lifetimes. We turn our attention to these holy events this week. Their concepts portray and reveal to us greater spiritual understanding. Then, Aries, the “light of life itself” shines through us.

A hike that’s across from Waddell Beach. I didn’t realize you could go across the highway and do a super simple loop, and it’s beautiful. You can see the coastline. Liz Porter, Santa Cruz, Community Outreach
