UCSC Arts Division presents a new free and public lecture series
On March 31, the UC Santa Cruz Arts Division will debut the Dean's Lecture Series "Creativity and Innovation,” a nine speaker, free public lecture series designed to challenge conventional ways of thinking and working in the world.
UCSC Arts Dean David Yager selected a diverse group of speakers, noted for their unique ability to bridge innovation and creativity within their professional career paths.
“Creativity and innovation come from many places and can be applied in many different ways,” Yager says. “With this series we are trying to find a diverse group of people who show how innovation and creativity can change the way we think.”
Cultural anthropologist Stephen Huyler is the first speaker of the series, presenting his lecture, “Daughters of India: Art and Identity,” on Thursday, March 31 at 6:00 p.m. in the UCSC Media Theater (Theater Arts Center).
According to a description of Huyler 's lecture on the UCSC Arts Department website, arts.ucsc.edu/creativity_innovation, “One in six women in the world lives in India, yet most of us in the West know little about them.”
Huyler's work aims to share the lives and struggles of some of these women. Over the course of four decades of field research in India, he has interviewed thousands of Indian women and recorded their viewpoints and stories.
Huyler's slide lecture profiles seven of these women from various geographic, social and economic backgrounds, illustrating the ways in which the women of India are applying their strength and creativity to meet the demands of a modern world.
Additional lecture series speakers include: Philip Brookman, curator of the Corcoran Gallery of Art; Darrin Caddes, VP of Corporate Design for Plantronics; Dan Roam, author/founder of Digital Roam; Sheldon Epps, Artistic Director of Pasadena Playhouse; Annie Morhauser of AnnieGlass; Scott Summit, designer/founder of Summit ID and cofounder of Bespoke prosthetics; prosperity trainer Darrell Brown, and Playtex Corporation director Nicholas de Monchaux.
Lectures are scheduled in the Media Theater for some Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. and Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. through June 2. A complete list of lecture dates, times and speaker information is available online at arts.ucsc.edu.
