May Day & the May New Moon

May Day & the May New MoonThe new moon occurs this week late close to midnight Monday night (Pacific), early morning hours (Eastern), 12 degrees Taurus. The Taurus personality building keynote is “Let struggle be undismayed.” While living in form and matter we learn not only about the nature of form itself, but, through encountering duality, we learn how to discriminate. Often this is a struggle.
Saturday, Venus opposes Saturn. We may feel isolated, separate from what we love and care for. Something new must be integrated.
Sunday is May Day, with various celebrations and commemorations, from early times to the present. May Day is the Festival of Flora (Roman goddess of flowers), a five-day Roman celebration. For the Druids, a new fire was lit, lending life to the springtime sun.

American Idol: The Durb Watch

Tax season has passed and spring is here and, well, it’s time to check in. How is your year unfolding? Hard to believe we’re nearly looking at May—I swear, “time” is speeding up. All this to say: Don’t freak out. And don’t forget to breathe as you move into prom season, graduation season, and, of course, the Easter holiday this weekend. (I’ll be thinking of my family back home eating all those homemade pierogi—someday, I’ll learn how to make them myself.)
In the meantime, this week also gives us another celebration: Dance. It’s National Dance Week. In the event you’ve never witnessed some of the magic that happens over the next seven to 10 days, you’re in for a treat.

Passover, Passion Week, Easter

Passover, Passion Week, Easter It’s Passover and Passion Week, two religious celebrations, two developmental stages of humanity. Passover—the Angel of Death “passed over the homes” of the Hebrews the night before leaving Egypt (end of Age of Taurus). Passion Week recreates the spiritual Initiations of Jesus and Christ—betrayal, crucifixion, death, resurrection (our Initiations, also).
Holy Thursday—Christ’s Last Supper, washing of the feet (signifying humility, Pisces Age task), Holy Eucharist (bread of matter, the wine of Spirit), Judas’ betrayal for 30 pieces of silver (personality betrays our spirit), agony in the Garden (Gethsemane) by absorbing world evil, accepting the task of World Savior (Pisces task) anchoring Love on Earth from Sirius and first strand of God’s Will (after much unknowingness and asking for help).

American Idol: The Durb Watch

On April 11, locals, family and friends of  Bryan Stow turned up to for a successful fundraiser at El Palomar in Downtown Santa Cruz. ($20,000 was raised.) The cantina and taco bar in the restaurant were packed and good wishes were extended to the local paramedic who was severly beaten by two men outside of Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles several weeks ago. Stow suffered severe head injuries and was placed in a medically induced coma. Take note of a growing Facebook presence in Stow’s honor—“Our Prayers Are With Bryan Stow” or “Bryan Stow Family Relief” to learn more about how to pitch in and/or give support.

The Great Battle of Self-interest

The Great Battle of Self-interest

CNBC has been showing a promo video lately featuring the late Milton Friedman, the free-market, laissez-faire economist. Friedman was hardly your Santa Cruz kind of guy as he argued bookishly against government regulation and what he saw as unreasonable intrusion into free enterprise.

In the video, circa 1980, Friedman asks a question of host Phil Donahue that resonates today, while governments at all levels face grinding debt and the likelihood of cutbacks.

His question: “Is it true that political self-interest is somehow nobler than economic self-interest?”

Aries Festival – Love & the Forces of Restoration

Aries Festival – Love & the Forces of RestorationSunday (Palm Sunday), April 17, 7:44 p.m. (West Coast), the Aries (Rays 1 & 7) solar full moon Festival occurs. On this day, the Love of God streams into the Earth. Esoterically, it is the great western Resurrection (of Life) festival when the Spirit of Resurrection is called forth to release the Forces of Restoration. Active during spring, these are the Forces that renew the Earth. Emanating from the Mind of God, and the Intelligence principle in nature, they stimulate, broaden and awaken the human mind (Mercury) so that intelligent thinking and appropriate action comes forth. During this time of transition and world emergency, the Forces of Restoration are active in every land. Initially they produce increased destruction leading to a reorganization of national life worldwide.

American Idol: The Durb Watch

It still baffles me that my mother and father nabbed our sweet little home in Elmhust, Illinois, for under $40,000. Imagine that! That was back in the ’70s. The house was paid off long ago, but I can’t help but think of how different times were back then and how challenging they seem to be now, especially when it comes to the issue of home buying—and home “keeping.” This week, we dive into the housing crisis, specifically foreclosures. Have they hit a peak? Beginning in News, we illuminate the issue, talking to locals who have been affected by the crisis. Then, in this week’s cover story, writer Patrick Dwire goes in-depth on the matter, highlighting the fact that foreclosures in Santa Cruz hit an all-time high in 2010. Dwire also talks to locals who’ve manuevered through what seems like a sea of paperwork with banks to prevent a foreclosure. (One woman’s tale is particularly interesting to note.)

Week of Festivals: Full Moon, Lantern Festival, Purim, Holi

It is a week of many different festivals along with a full moon, all occurring simultaneously. Thursday Chinese New Year celebrations end with the Lantern Festival (at full moon). Thursday is also the Pisces Solar festival (full moon), Purim (Jewish Festival) and Holi (Hindu New Year Festival). Sunday, March 8, Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 a.m. The festival of Purim celebrates the freedom of the Hebrew people from the cruel Haman (a magistrate) seeking to destroy them. Esther, the Queen of Persia, who was secretly Jewish, saved her people from death. The sweet cookie hamentaschen celebrates this festival. Friday, March 6, is Holi, the Hindu Spring Festival celebrated after the March full moon. Bonfires are lit the night before, warding off evil. Holi, the Festival of Colors, is the most colorful festival in the world. It is also the Festival of Love—of Radha for Krishna (the blue-colored God). It is a spring festival with singing, dancing, carnivals, food and bhang, a drink made of cannabis leaves. Holi signifies good over evil, ridding oneself of past errors, ending conflicts through rapprochement (returning to each other). It is a day of forgiveness, including debts. Holi also marks the beginning of New Year. At the Pisces Solar festival we recite the seed thought, “We leave the Father’s home and, turning back, we save.” Great Teachers remain on Earth until all of humanity is enlightened. The New Group of World Servers is called to this task and sacrifice. Sacrifice (from the heart) is the first Law of the Soul, the heart of which is Love. This sacrifice saves the world.

When looking for a bottle of something to have with dinner, Gewürztraminer 2012 is not the first wine to come to mind. Given the popularity of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Pinot Noir—to name but a few—Gewürztraminer sits low on the totem pole.
