What are the most important issues to you in the upcoming local elections?

What are the most important issues to you in the upcoming local elections?

What I'm concerned about right now is water. I don’t know how that’s going to be resolved as far as the election, but I was told we have to cut back on water. I'm really into my plants, so that’s my latest concern.

Luxury Vinyl Tile: Vinyl’s Glamorous Makeover

Luxury Vinyl Tile: Vinyl’s Glamorous Makeover

When you hear the words “vinyl flooring,” what words come to mind? Industrial? Practical? Boring? Maybe that was true in the past, not anymore. Over the years, vinyl flooring has undergone a glamorous makeover, and the outcome is a new product called luxury vinyl tile (or LVT for short). Luxury Vinyl has been around for years. The newest edition to this type of flooring, LVT, has been receiving a lot of attention recently in the design industry because it not only has wonderful aesthetics; it has many other benefits.

Plus Letters To the Editor

Somebody wise said that when you need a sign from the Universe to help you through life’s more curious moments, you can always find it in sentences that contain three words. There’s “Don’t freak out.” Or “Get over it.”  And, of course, the durable “Let it go.” (We could all use a little guidance with that last one perhaps.)

How would you feel about a tech industry boom in Santa Cruz?

How would you feel about a tech industry boom in Santa Cruz?

I feel like it would ruin the small old-town feeling of Santa Cruz. It wouldn’t be the same Surf City kind of vacation town that it is.

Buying Is Still Cheaper Than Renting

Buying Is Still Cheaper Than Renting

Home prices have been rising slowly and steadily this year, but according to a recently published analysis from Trulia Chief Economist Jed Kolko, homeownership is still cheaper than renting nationally. Of course, the gap between renting and buying depends on location.

Which is your favorite street musician in Santa Cruz?

My favorite street performer goes back a few years, when I first moved to Santa Cruz, it's Tom Scribner. And a relative of his was a student in one of the classes I taught maybe 15 years ago.

Aries—The Will to Be

Aries—The Will to Be

Last week, Sun entering Aries, the new spiritual year began. Archangel Raphael assumed protection of the Earth. Raphael is the Archangel of Healing. During Aries, Raphael and the Forces of Restoration work together streaming new light and life into the Earth. They come in on the wings of the Spirit of Resurrection.

Aries is the Initiating Will-to-Be, a continuous pulse of the Life Force. Aries’ fiery aethers move through the cosmos seeking where to anchor in form and matter. Mars, presently retrograde, is the personality-ruler of Aries. Mars presents humanity with Nine Tests of the personality. With Mars retrograde our experience of Spring may be subdued, intent as we are on inner tests.

Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, occurs this year during Libra, the sign of creating right relations with all aspects life and with earth’s kingdoms. We contemplate (the Libra meditation) forgiveness, which means, “to give for another.” Forgiveness is not pardon. It’s a sacrifice (fire in the heart, giving from the heart). Forgiveness is giving up for the good of the other. This is the law of evolution (the path of return).

Best of Santa Cruz County

The 2013 Santa Cruz County Readers' Poll and Critics’ Picks It’s our biggest issue of the year, and in it, your votes—more than 6,500 of them—determined the winners of The Best of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll. New to the long list of local restaurants, shops and other notables that captured your interest: Best Beer Selection, Best Locally Owned Business, Best Customer Service and Best Marijuana Dispensary. In the meantime, many readers were ever so chatty online about potential new categories. Some of the suggestions that stood out: Best Teen Program and Best Web Design/Designer. But what about: Dog Park, Church, Hotel, Local Farm, Therapist (I second that!) or Sports Bar—not to be confused with Bra. Our favorite suggestion: Best Act of Kindness—one reader noted Café Gratitude and the free meals it offered to the Santa Cruz Police Department in the aftermath of recent crimes. Perhaps some of these can be woven into next year’s ballot, so stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy the following pages and take note of our Critics’ Picks, too, beginning on page 91. A big thanks for voting—and for reading—and an even bigger congratulations to all of the winners. Enjoy.  -Greg Archer, EditorBest of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll INDEX

Apricot Wine for Dessert

Thomas Kruse Winery, a participant in the new Santa Clara Wine Trail, has been around for a long time—since 1971, to be exact. When our little group arrived to try some wine at the Kruses’ low-key tasting room, Thomas Kruse and his wife Karen were there to greet us. Theirs is a small operation, and they’re proud to offer quality wine at affordable prices. “Because we are small and low-tech, it’s easy to relate to the whole winemaking process,” says Karen—and the Kruses take pride in making wine “just like it has been made for centuries.”
