You survived the Ides of March. You got through St. Patrick’s Day with ease. Now, it’s all about the beginning of spring. Fortunately, we’re not digging our way out of the snow, like some of our family members have been back east, so that’s a good thing. But take note: In case you have not grabbed a copy, be sure to pick up GT’s Spring Home & Garden magazine (at kiosks).
In it, you’ll find an abundance of features and factoids on the latest and greatest our area has to offer on the subject. Enjoy.

I would pick Tom Davis. He is the owner of the climbing gym, Pacific Edge, and I find his climbing accomplishments and his sense of community to be very inspiring to me.

Crime Time: Driving Under the Influence of Marijuana

Crime Time: Driving Under the Influence of Marijuana

It is against the law to drive under the influence of marijuana in California. If you are pulled over and the officer suspects you’re stoned, he or she may call in a Drug Recognition Expert who will evaluate you for signs of intoxication such as dilated pupils and dry mouth. If convicted, you risk up to five years probation, fees and fines, participation in a Drinking Driver Program as well as a suspension or restriction of your driving privilege. Anyone arrested for DUI/THC should contact a lawyer who specializes in DUI cases. There are many inconclusive factors regarding driving under the influence of marijuana and the THC test results that should be considered.

The Three Levels of Pisces

The Three Levels of Pisces

Sunday is the Full moon Pisces Solar Festival (26 degrees) and Purim, the Jewish Festival of Queen Esther who saved the temple in Persia and her people.
In this last week of Pisces, let us understand Pisces more. Our world is made up of energy triangles (like Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic domes). Every person, event, kingdom functions on three levels (Personality, Soul, Spirit—the Trinity in all of creation and religions).

Let’s face it, the moods swing. Sometimes too often for some of us. But if you ever think you don’t have it in you to get through something challenging, perhaps this week’s cover story on Santa Cruzan Alekz Londos will help you shift some limited thinking. Londos, perhaps one of the most enterprising locals we’ve come across in the past year, has a tremendous amount of disaster-relief training under his belt. He’s also quite brave. In the past decade, he’s been on hand for relief efforts in the aftermaths of several storms and hurricanes that plagued the United States and beyond.

How to Clean and Maintain Your Hardwood Floors

How to Clean and Maintain Your Hardwood Floors

They’re natural, rich, gorgeous, and timeless. It’s no wonder so many people choose hardwood floors for their homes.  Like its name, hardwood feels hard to the touch, but it can be more sensitive than it looks.

Spring Forward, Fall Back

Spring Forward, Fall Back

Jupiter is in the astrological news this week. Thursday Jupiter in Cancer ends a five-month retrograde (since November 2013). Jupiter is the personality-building helper (ruler) of Sagittarius. Jupiter is also the heart of the Aquarian Age. Receiving and distributing Ray 2 (Love/Wisdom) from a star in the Big Dipper, Jupiter at first expands us. Everything grows bigger. Then Jupiter blends dualities – head and heart, thinking and loving, above and below. The result is Wisdom.

Mercury Direct, Mars and Saturn Retrograde, Lent

Mercury Direct, Mars and Saturn Retrograde, Lent

Friday morning (Feb. 28) Mercury in Aquarius turns stationary direct. Until Marsh 21 we remain under the shadow of Mercury retrograde. If we begin each day aligned with the Will-to-Good, Right Choice and Right Action come forth. As Mercury turns direct, Mars (actions) and Saturn (structures) retrograde. It’s like a game of chess. The entire first half of 2014 is under a retrograde watch.

Best of Santa Cruz County

The 2013 Santa Cruz County Readers' Poll and Critics’ Picks It’s our biggest issue of the year, and in it, your votes—more than 6,500 of them—determined the winners of The Best of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll. New to the long list of local restaurants, shops and other notables that captured your interest: Best Beer Selection, Best Locally Owned Business, Best Customer Service and Best Marijuana Dispensary. In the meantime, many readers were ever so chatty online about potential new categories. Some of the suggestions that stood out: Best Teen Program and Best Web Design/Designer. But what about: Dog Park, Church, Hotel, Local Farm, Therapist (I second that!) or Sports Bar—not to be confused with Bra. Our favorite suggestion: Best Act of Kindness—one reader noted Café Gratitude and the free meals it offered to the Santa Cruz Police Department in the aftermath of recent crimes. Perhaps some of these can be woven into next year’s ballot, so stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy the following pages and take note of our Critics’ Picks, too, beginning on page 91. A big thanks for voting—and for reading—and an even bigger congratulations to all of the winners. Enjoy.  -Greg Archer, EditorBest of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll INDEX

Santa Clara Wine Trail

My memories of growing up in England include my mother pouring port after Sunday dinner—and sometimes a glass of sherry before dinner. My family didn’t drink much wine back then, but we certainly made up for it with the port and sherry.
