United Nations Day of Families

RisaNewSThis is our last week of Taurus, sign of Enlightenment. The Forces of Enlightenment are preparing for the Gemini Festival of Humanity. Thursday night is Taurus new moon. The Taurus personality-building seed thought is “Let struggle be undismayed.” Our personality learns the nature of form and matter through struggling with duality. Before the Soul directs the personality it too must learn about duality. From understanding duality, we learn discrimination and the ability to choose right from wrong, good from bad, light from dark. A mantra (the NGWS recite daily) from the Upanishads reflecting this is, “Lead us, oh Lord, from darkness to light, from the unreal to the real, from death to immortality.”  Saturday, May 15 (observed May 13), is the United Nations International Day of Families. Families are the first community we experience. Family is a primary social unit and the foundation for society. It is an instrument (basic school) for education, culture, character building, ethics, virtues, responsibility and peace (or war). Through family we experience Ray 4, Harmony that emerges from Conflict. Humanity is Ray 4. Family, all types of families, is a crucible for learning. A village can be a family. The UN focus on families this year (2010) is “The impact of migration on families around the world,” as 214 million people have migrated to different countries in search of food, stability, employment and to escape war. Family members are left behind during migrations creating great emotional upheaval. As we ponder upon these ideas, and work to strengthen our family units, let us “open our hearts to the needs of migrants and their families.” Each family is a “holy family.”

ariesAries-March 21–April 20
As everything begins to transform before your eyes, thoughts of money and possessions, things held in common with others, and you consider how to “make all things new” and how to create a new and different financial future and you’re not afraid but you know the world is changing and you are immediately part of the initiations taking hold. Old plans won’t work.

taurusTaurus
April 21–May 21
There is a feeling of needing to recreate yourself, making yourself anew and so you look at your self-esteem, body image, question yourself (“are you or are you not”?), feel the fire of desire to have a new identification, one in which you radiate focused power and purposeful use of Will. You lead, everyone follows (except a few).

geminiGemini
May 22–June 20
You have many thoughts and unusual dreams about someone from the past and also about a new path needing to be taken. At first the dreams are opaque but them you realize you’re swimming in the Waters of Life and you feel the need to be in community where inclusivity is the rule and liberation is path which is the pathway of the Server. What do you want to serve?

June 21–July 20
I have often written “contact releases Love.” This is especially important for you this month and in the months to come. Groups, associations, friends all assist you in acquiring a greater sense of identity. At first it’s best to be in small group, even one-on-one encounters assist you in identifying your gifts, abilities, and keen insights (often disregarded). What group would you like to belong to?

leoLeo
July 21–August 22
You are accomplished in the world of matter, you are looked up to, a leader, and your sense of identity and pride in yourself has helped you succeed. Now you begin a new cycle, several actually, where you move ahead with confidence, with new agendas and public recognition. Remember to serve as you lead. The first test for leaders is pride. Hold yours intact. Have pride in others, too.

virgoVirgo
August 23–September 22
Things far away are of interest to you, especially now. Things metaphysical that have to do with justice, libraries, and places of study call you to attention. They are significant to you. You wonder what would enrich your mind, broaden your knowledge base, create new thinking and perhaps a new future life. Perhaps there is a clue in the visions you’re having. What are they?

libraLibra
September 23–October 22
Look at all expenses, including loans and credit card usage, and attempt to lessen outlay. Pay off loans and debts as soon as possible. There are hidden expenses you might unaware of. Are you conscious of your finances, creating a monthly financial plan of maintenance? In some ways is your life a secret and is it hidden from those close to you? There’s a longing.

scorpioScorpio
October 23–November 21
You can be the most stable of signs when it comes to partner and relationships. However, sometimes you’re hidden from your partner. It takes a long time to trust them. But when trust does come, you’re theirs forever. Partnership helps each day as you battle with life. Partnerships heal and sustain you. Then you transform. But you must also “do your part,” impeccably.

saggSagittarius
November 22–December 20
Although it seems shrouded at times, you are inching slowly toward something (anything, you think!) that makes your work easier and yet more significant. Often the present isn’t understood till later when we realize how useful the tests were (are). Something valuable is occurring. Work with others a bit more playfully. Tend to someone in the family.

capricornCapricorn
December 21–January 20
A great depth of creativity will emerge from you this week and will continue for a long time to come. There is spontaneity of spirit that is at the root of this creativity and a deep aspiration to have fun, to play, to be light and free and share this with others. You have moved from the crystal form to a diamond. Your imagination, originality, inspiration and ingenuity are polishing all your facets.

aquariusAquarius
January 21–February 18

It seems you sense the need for a new foundation, perhaps a home or a new awareness of self. You are very creative. The art that you conceive and create is a foundation of identity for you. However, you also must have solid things in form and matter. Although you are an air sign, it would be good to begin a garden. It would ground and stabilize you. Begin with several basil and 2 tomato plants, oregano and dill.

piscesPisces
February 19–March 20
There are things you need to say, words, ideas and feelings that must be communicated. However, so often you don’t feel (and aren’t) heard. In the coming weeks, this will change a bit. When you speak others will listen, when communicating there will be understanding. There is a duality in your life. You’re not living in the way you feel you should. Why? What is the complication? What is the need?

Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, occurs this year during Libra, the sign of creating right relations with all aspects life and with earth’s kingdoms. We contemplate (the Libra meditation) forgiveness, which means, “to give for another.” Forgiveness is not pardon. It’s a sacrifice (fire in the heart, giving from the heart). Forgiveness is giving up for the good of the other. This is the law of evolution (the path of return).

Best of Santa Cruz County

The 2013 Santa Cruz County Readers' Poll and Critics’ Picks It’s our biggest issue of the year, and in it, your votes—more than 6,500 of them—determined the winners of The Best of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll. New to the long list of local restaurants, shops and other notables that captured your interest: Best Beer Selection, Best Locally Owned Business, Best Customer Service and Best Marijuana Dispensary. In the meantime, many readers were ever so chatty online about potential new categories. Some of the suggestions that stood out: Best Teen Program and Best Web Design/Designer. But what about: Dog Park, Church, Hotel, Local Farm, Therapist (I second that!) or Sports Bar—not to be confused with Bra. Our favorite suggestion: Best Act of Kindness—one reader noted Café Gratitude and the free meals it offered to the Santa Cruz Police Department in the aftermath of recent crimes. Perhaps some of these can be woven into next year’s ballot, so stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy the following pages and take note of our Critics’ Picks, too, beginning on page 91. A big thanks for voting—and for reading—and an even bigger congratulations to all of the winners. Enjoy.  -Greg Archer, EditorBest of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll INDEX

Apricot Wine for Dessert

Thomas Kruse Winery, a participant in the new Santa Clara Wine Trail, has been around for a long time—since 1971, to be exact. When our little group arrived to try some wine at the Kruses’ low-key tasting room, Thomas Kruse and his wife Karen were there to greet us. Theirs is a small operation, and they’re proud to offer quality wine at affordable prices. “Because we are small and low-tech, it’s easy to relate to the whole winemaking process,” says Karen—and the Kruses take pride in making wine “just like it has been made for centuries.”
