(Safe)”Guard the Change”

RisaNewSIn Washington, Saturday, Sept. 18, President Obama spoke to Congressional Black Caucus leaders saying, "I need everybody here to go back to your neighborhoods, and workplaces, to your churches, and barbershops, and beauty shops. Tell them we have more work to do. Tell them we can't wait to organize. Tell them that the time for action is now.”

President Obama is correct. We know astrologically change and transformation are everywhere with a simultaneous powerful resistance to those changes by the forces of retrogression. So not only the Black Caucus leaders but all of us are called to action and to (safe)“guard the change.”

Libra, the sign of balance influencing us this month, always appears in times of transition helping us choose which path to take: forward or backward? Libra’s active intelligence (Ray 3) moves us through chaos and conflict toward balance and harmony. Libra provides a quiet focus so we can gain perspective (like the giraffe in non-violent communication techniques), understand the needs of our present times, and our position within them cosmically and spiritually. Libra creates an interlude of peace and equanimity.

It’s important to also know that

“The whole of creation is involved in this transformation. The elementals of Fire, Earth, Air and Water, and the Devas, who bring these energies into manifestation—all are subject to this change. Let us approach this change with the intention of ‘doing our part wisely’ by intentional acts of Goodwill which create Right Relations which then create the process of Peace.” And let us expel all notions of fear through the understanding that “love underlies all happenings of the times.”

In the sky, Venus is slowing down, about to retrograde, with Mars nearby. Both are in Scorpio. An interesting state of economics, regeneration, sexual identity, the art and nature or relationships emerges.

Esoteric Astrology as News for the week of Sept 30–Oct 6, 2010 For Sun and Rising Signs

ariesAries-March 21–April 20
A potent time. Strong desires & powerful emotions act like ocean swells almost overcoming your ability to think. They give you the courage to go where others won’t or can’t. Is something secret? Careful! Tend to finances and resources held with another. Something’s regenerating. Hopefully your relationships. Don’t be ruthless and don’t seek to conquer. Work with.

taurusTaurus
April 21–May 21
You think about your relationship within the context of industriousness, usefulness. You tend to encourage others in order to involve them in working with you. Careful with your energy within relationships. You could create a separation through aggressive tendencies, anger, harsh communication. On the other hand there is great passion leading to compromises, deep listening, leading to interesting negotiations.

geminiGemini
May 22–June 20
You become a hard worker. This is a change: from mental to physical labor with strong emotions pushing you. It’s important to practice extreme care and safety, especially while doing any physical labor, lest accidents, burns, rashes, things red and scratchy occur. Be kind to co-workers. A lot of fire trucks, police and emergency vehicles may come your way. Things hot and dangerous. A bit like you’ve become. Interesting.

cancerCancer
June 21–July 20
You need some pleasure to pursue, love and romance, sports, competitive and disciplined. However, most likely you focus on children, showering them with gifts. In turn they may not act as you would expect. Their energies are high, almost uncontrollable. This will pass. However you must watch over them carefully. Allow yourself to be foolhardy at times. And stroll through a sculpture garden.

leoLeo
July 21–August 22
Themes seem to be the same: family, parents, home, property, roots, family life. There’s something needing balancing concerning your perception of family and/or parents. Make peace with mother and women in your life. The old anger doesn’t hold up anymore. It actually weakens you. The cosmic energies can be used to beautify, repair and organize home. Seek a way to insure care for the future.

virgoVirgo
August 23–September 22
You’re thinking and talking a lot. Thinking about a possible partnership, lover, friend? Careful not to intimidate anyone with overwhelming communication. Seeking information you need not be argumentative. Allow a natural rhythm to occur with work, making arrangements and plans. Write letters by hand, use pen, ink, envelopes, stamps and a secret seal. This is a meditation. Learn calligraphy.

libraLibra
September 23–October 22
You enjoy making, having and using money. Money is a resource, a way to help others. It provides freedom and choice. It can be used to create more wealth. We are given the gift of money and resources so we can help rebuild the lives of humanity in need. It’s important to tithe ten percent of your income to charity. Which ones call to you? Tithing ensures a constant flow. You’re allowed to be frivolous sometimes.

scorpioScorpio
October 23–November 21
You find that stamina and endurance seem to grow stronger each day. You find more challenges along your path and you rise to meet them. Your self-identity expands as you pursue more independence, a sense of liberty and freedom. Careful not to bump your head. Careful of fire. For fun, dye your hair red using a natural dye. Complete all projects. Plan your next ones. Your intuition rises, reaches out to others.

saggSagittarius
November 22–December 20
Your strength for about a month is hidden. Only you are aware of it. Next to your hidden strength are your desires. They’re secret, too. Sometimes you don’t know your motivation or reason for choosing something. Sometimes you feel you’re in a conspiracy. Your past comes to roost, you wonder do you have enemies? To overcome this seeming paranoia, express yourself creatively in an endeavor you are not used to.

capricornCapricorn
December 21–January 20
You have hopes, wishes and dreams. You want to express yourself socially with friends (more than one) and associates. You want to be part of a group that recognized your gifts. You want to be with people who don’t think you’re scandalous when you make some outrageous artistic move. You’re strong, at times revolutionary. Don’t change. Review goals. Create a manifestation journal. Use it daily.

aquariusAquarius
January 21–February 18
You’re to become an adventurer, traveler, and/or philosopher. Justice becomes a focus. You see where humanity is caught in the thralldom of materiality. Aquarius is the sign of humanity. You worry, sensitive to humanity’s needs. You wonder where you stand—an excellent question. You benefit by traveling. Undergoing change traveling incurs while learning about humanitarian causes. You become a world server.

piscesPisces
February 19–March 20
A regeneration needs to occur, allowing a new sense of self-confidence. You’re sometimes afraid to be on your own, afraid of following your own needs, wishes and dreams. What would assist you in this? Your needs are very important. Pisces often serves others before serving themselves. You must now turn your energies and eyes inward and seek your own counsel, reliability, safety and trust. Entrusting yourself to your self.

Mercury Enters Libra

It’s the week of Burning Man, the temporary, intentional, alternative, art-filled community on the playas of Nevada. Mercury, messenger of the Sun, enters Libra this week. Libra is the equalizer, a sign of balance and right human relations. Sometimes with Libra, we can be indecisive and confused while learning how to make balanced and right choices. Sometimes to keep the peace we communicate only what others want to hear. Eventually, we learn how to speak from the heart.

Best of Santa Cruz County

The 2013 Santa Cruz County Readers' Poll and Critics’ Picks It’s our biggest issue of the year, and in it, your votes—more than 6,500 of them—determined the winners of The Best of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll. New to the long list of local restaurants, shops and other notables that captured your interest: Best Beer Selection, Best Locally Owned Business, Best Customer Service and Best Marijuana Dispensary. In the meantime, many readers were ever so chatty online about potential new categories. Some of the suggestions that stood out: Best Teen Program and Best Web Design/Designer. But what about: Dog Park, Church, Hotel, Local Farm, Therapist (I second that!) or Sports Bar—not to be confused with Bra. Our favorite suggestion: Best Act of Kindness—one reader noted Café Gratitude and the free meals it offered to the Santa Cruz Police Department in the aftermath of recent crimes. Perhaps some of these can be woven into next year’s ballot, so stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy the following pages and take note of our Critics’ Picks, too, beginning on page 91. A big thanks for voting—and for reading—and an even bigger congratulations to all of the winners. Enjoy.  -Greg Archer, EditorBest of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll INDEX

A Cab To Be Coveted

I first tasted Villa del Monte’s 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon at a Fourth of July party, where the hosts had bought a case of it because they love it and didn’t want to run out. It’s one of those wines that will grab you—in the best way—with its full body and rich fruit characteristics.
