Venus Direct & Scorpio to Sagittarius

RisaNewSOn Thursday, both Jupiter (in Pisces) and Venus (in Libra) turn from retrograde to stationary direct. On Monday the Sun moves from Scorpio to Sag. We shift from deep waters to the plains; from the eagle to the horse; from the depths to seeking the heights; from the star Antares to the Galactic Center; from the opal to the topaz; from Mars to Jupiter; from Orion to Chiron; from Tuesday to Thursday; from the sign of death and regeneration to the sign of the adventurer, riding the white horse, bow and arrow in hand, seeking the mountain tops of Capricorn. Both Scorpio and Sag are signs of discipleship. Sunday morning we have a full moon solar festival (9:27 a.m., West Coast) at 29.18 degrees Scorpio. Called the November Hunter’s Moon, it’s also a blue moon, being the 3rd full moon of four to fall in a season (from fall equinox to winter solstice). The meditative seed thought the NGWS recite during this Scorpio solar festival is “Warrior I am and from the battle I emerge triumphant.” Scorpio is always triumphant.
On Thursday, the U.S. has transiting Jupiter opposite Neptune. Jupiter brings forth abundant energies, Neptune either illusion, grace or spiritual contact. During oppositions polarities are pointed out, everyone’s mad, rejection occurs, then a gradual integration begins. Jupiter and Neptune are rulers of Pisces, sign of the world savior, sign of saving the world—the esoteric task of the United States.

Esoteric Astrology as News for the week of Nov 18–Nov 24, 2010 For Sun and Rising Signs
ariesAries-March 21–April 20
Relationship interactions will call you to tell the truth, to ask for what you want and need, to reflect and figure out what you’re willing to give in return. Allowing nothing to happen, not providing information, not exploring and explaining desires and aspirations in relationships keeps everyone in the dark. True love is communication. Communication creates true love. Nothing else matters.

taurusTaurus
April 21–May 21
It’s important to plan, create agendas and schedules that structure daily life. It’s important that a routine be established, priorities stated, goals set and details worked out so you can achieve greater efficiency. Allow nothing and no one to get in the way of creating what to you is essential discipline in order to prepare for the future. And you actually know what that future will be.

geminiGemini
May 22–June 20
For two months there have been inklings of a new creative process emerging. However, the time was not right, the season hadn’t arrived. You know there’s a time and season for everything and Geminis are smart enough to follow them. It’s time to list the projects you only thought about, choosing several to follow up on. Conflict turns into peace and harmony, confidence into well-being.

cancerCancer
June 21–July 20
Certain situations have erupted placing you between two different realities you are attempting to balance. However, each day this becomes more difficult and you become exhausted. What’s at stake are values and you’re asking what’s most important while home has become a place where change must take place. You need sleep, quiet, rest, comfort and solitude.

leoLeo
July 21–August 22
Perhaps it’s been difficult the past two months for others to understand your hopes, wishes, needs. Perhaps it’s been a bit lonely and you’ve felt misunderstood. Perhaps you longed for clarity and thought it would never arrive. It has now and it’s just begun. You will no longer have to enter into silent retreat because of difficulties in communication. Discernment was the purpose for the last several months.

virgoVirgo
August 23–September 22
Have you been tending to your finances, figuring out resources for a true perspective of where you stand? Is something occurring at home, perhaps a state of anger or dissatisfaction, a sense of restriction that leads to a complete restructuring of your surroundings? Are you wanting to run away from home and wondering if you have adequate funds? Take a bit more time to reflect on your choices. More answers emerge soon.

libraLibra
September 23–October 22
Your body has changed and in the past several months a new vision of self has begun to emerge and you find you want to look a certain way that enhances your self esteem, benefits your earning power, and creates a balance between how you feel and how you’re perceived. It has been important in the last years for your desires to manifest. Now that you have much of what you hoped for, whom will you begin to assist?

scorpioScorpio
October 23–November 21
That nebulous feeling of not knowing anything, even the time of day, the month and perhaps year, is slowly dissolving and with it comes a sense of knowing once again what you want and need and understanding desires and aspirations. For so long you’ve heard yourself saying “I don’t know, I don’t know.” Allow circumstances to present themselves before stepping into new situations. Watch, look and listen.

saggSagittarius
November 22–December 20
It’s good to assess these days your true friends and acquaintances. It’s important to know whom to turn to for care, warmth and true respect. So much is in flux and change that we must begin to understand where real support comes from and where our support is accepted. Reach out and touch those you care about. Surround them with love and appreciation. The planets are entering Sagittarius and your potency increases.

capricornCapricorn
December 21–January 20
Everyone who comes in contact with you realizes you are a teacher and someone to be reckoned with. They realize although you may have a sense of humor and be the life of the party, it’s best not to cross, take advantage of, ignore or treat you unkindly. They realize you have values and principles concerning Right Relations and Goodwill. It’s good to list your likes and dislikes, needs and wants. Then post it for everyone to see. Begin with family.

aquariusAquarius
January 21–February 18
Many changes have occurred in the past months and many uncertainties emerged and visions you held seemed to melt away due to so many unusual tasks and responsibilities. Now there is fresh air and time to choose and eliminate and you can take a stand on the direction of your life and figure out what’s a dream and what is reality. Things, people, information far way seem vital and significant. Contact them.

piscesPisces
February 19–March 20
Look at your life and observe what it is you do daily. Observe your thoughts, what you’re thinking of, your focus, goals and intentions? Do you know? What is it you want and need? Begin with what you don’t want and need. Paradoxes abound in your life. To be efficient and balanced you must stand in the middle, betwixt and between. Focus on the small daily details of your life. The larger life events will simply appear on their own.

Aries Solar Festival

Sunday is Palm Sunday. Symbolizing victory and triumph, paradise, sacrifice and martyrdom, the Pisces World Teacher entered Jerusalem (City of Peace) on a donkey (signifying humility).

Sugar: The New Tobacco?

Proposed bill would require warning labels on sugary drinks Will soda and other saccharine libations soon come with a health warning? They will if it’s up to our state senator, Bill Monning (D-Carmel). On Feb. 27, Monning proposed first-of-its-kind legislation that would require a consumer warning label be placed on sugar-sweetened beverages sold in California. SB 1000, also known as the Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Safety Warning Act, was proposed to provide vital information to consumers about the harmful effects of consuming sugary drinks, such as sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks, and sweetened teas.

Animal Magnetism

Bear, mouse dare to be friends in charming ‘Ernest and Celestine’ It’s not exactly Romeo and Juliet. It’s not even a romance, although it is a love story about two individuals separated by prejudice who find the courage to form an unshakable bond despite the rules and traditions that keep them apart.

Printer's Devil

Iconic editor Buz Bezore, who died last month at the age of 68, left a huge mark on Santa Cruz journalism   Eventually, it’s all a blur. You live long enough, and maybe a little too hard at times, so that when you hit the rewind button of faded memory, it moves so fast that you can hardly sort and gather the details. One scene skips to the next, and to the next, without proper editing or sequencing. Chronologies get distorted. Which came first: stealing the chickens or coloring the eggs?

How would you feel about a tech industry boom in Santa Cruz?

I feel like it would ruin the small old-town feeling of Santa Cruz. It wouldn’t be the same Surf City kind of vacation town that it is. Antoinette BennettSanta Cruz | Construction Management

Best of Santa Cruz County

The 2013 Santa Cruz County Readers' Poll and Critics’ Picks It’s our biggest issue of the year, and in it, your votes—more than 6,500 of them—determined the winners of The Best of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll. New to the long list of local restaurants, shops and other notables that captured your interest: Best Beer Selection, Best Locally Owned Business, Best Customer Service and Best Marijuana Dispensary. In the meantime, many readers were ever so chatty online about potential new categories. Some of the suggestions that stood out: Best Teen Program and Best Web Design/Designer. But what about: Dog Park, Church, Hotel, Local Farm, Therapist (I second that!) or Sports Bar—not to be confused with Bra. Our favorite suggestion: Best Act of Kindness—one reader noted Café Gratitude and the free meals it offered to the Santa Cruz Police Department in the aftermath of recent crimes. Perhaps some of these can be woven into next year’s ballot, so stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy the following pages and take note of our Critics’ Picks, too, beginning on page 91. A big thanks for voting—and for reading—and an even bigger congratulations to all of the winners. Enjoy.  -Greg Archer, EditorBest of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll INDEX

Comanche Cellars

Pinot Noir 2010 I first tasted Comanche Cellars Pinot when a friend brought a bottle to share over lunch at Center Street Grill in Santa Cruz. Upon trying it, I knew I had to find out more about it.
