Goodwill on Earth, Peace To All

RisaNewSChristmas is Saturday, with a Virgo (let us not be critical, let us be grateful) moon (with matter, mother, the past). Let us, as an antidote, have the purposeful intentions for Gratitude, for Goodwill, which, through the establishment of Right Relations, brings Peace to the world ... which “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing.” Christmas Day is a good day, with planets in trine which bring about harmony. There is actually a “depth” of Goodwill all around.

And so, we are now at the very end (the last week) of 2010. To honor with gratitude our lives lived out in time and space for the past year, let us review (it’s still Mercury retrograde in Sag) what our goals, hopes, wishes and dreams (personal, social, global, financial, spiritual, material, etc.) were.

At the end of the review (on the 31st), we can write our hopes, wishes, goals and needs for the coming year.  As we have few precious days left of 2010, let us participate in the 12 Days of Christmas, extending the Christmas spirit until Jan. 8, Three Kings Day. This ritual prepares us for the New Year as each day, Dec. 26 – Jan 6, is a foreshadowing of the coming 12 signs and 12 months of 2011.

Dec. 26 honors Aries (things new). Dec. 27 is Taurus (constancy). Dec. 28 Gemini (duality). December 29 Cancer (nurture)—continued next week. Let us remember what is important & what is not (Rascal Flats). Happy Christmas, everyone.

Esoteric Astrology as News for the week of Dec 23–Dec 29, 2010 For Sun and Rising Signs

ariesAries-March 21–April 20
You seek an intensity in all encounters, even with casual interactions. Anything superficial limits your need for closeness. You consider what this vulnerable state means for it is unusual. You do not want to feel betrayal. You want to feel your love nature, all consuming, devoted totally. And you seek this in return. You find beauty everywhere, especially with those in need. The spirit of the season is upon you.

taurusTaurus
April 21–May 21
Relationship is your life force. You can live, work and be alone. However, at this time harmony with another is more important. You seek, in ways great and small, balance and peace. There’s great responsibility and many tasks demanded with long term relationships. Most important is compromise in all things, creating a home and reality together. Relationships need to call upon a state of grace so love can be expressed. You do the “calling.”

geminiGemini
May 22–June 20
You want to be practical and helpful (not always but for now) in your relationship. You want to learn how to best serve those close to you, especially a partner. Not overly loving, you are however, thoughtful and available. In all ways you seek harmony and order, for you realize opportunity such as this is fleeting. Know that you can design a relationship filled with everything everyone needs. But first, be somewhat romantic.

cancerCancer
June 21–July 20
No matter your age, you exude a great magnetic attractivenness. The outcome could be a new relationships (or vivifying a present one). It could be everyone listens attentively to your ideas. You are more loving and in turn more loved and appreciated. A creative self-expression about to come forth. You know what is right, what is good, what is fair and what is just. You radiate good cheer. Or try to.

leoLeo
July 21–August 22
You may feel as if you simply cannot leave hearth, home, family, garden, or pets, even if it’s a goldfish (a Pisces influence). You think about the past, feel nostalgic, a bit sad, thinking of previous loves, of opportunities not taken, of places unvisited. This gives you the impetus to change your environment to reflect a new aesthetic of peaceableness, and stability. You sense what is most important and what is not. You sing. Try.

virgoVirgo
August 23–September 22
It seems you want more friends, you want companionship and to be one in return. You want to know everyone in the neighborhood. You want them to speak with you and you with them. You want to know the names of the winter plants, flowers and birds. You need communication, no conflict, diplomacy, cheerfulness and wit. Begin your communication with the devas. The rest follows.

libraLibra
September 23–October 22
During this time there’s a feeling of contentment, a sense that everything’s OK. Every now and then there’s restlessness, small thoughts that ask if you’re really happy and what makes happiness happen? Amidst the simple pleasures you’ve created, you want a sharing to occur—with friends, intimates, and most of all family (again, who is your family?). Love is stable. There is comfort. For a while.

scorpioScorpio
October 23–November 21
Do you deny yourself? Do you step back from what you desire, aspire toward, love? If so, let this drop away for several weeks, attempt to place yourself at the center and reach out to what is comforting, restful, kind and caring. Allow yourself to loosen up a bit, letting some of your protective shields to drop. You will be safe. Dress up a bit. Think of yourself as a listener and one who has developed cooperation. A new thought.

saggSagittarius
November 22–December 20
Parts of you have migrated into a private place, a sort of hibernation, taking cover like a bear entering a cave for the winter. Other parts of you are out and about attempting to be merry. Simply know and allow this to be. Don’t think something is wrong. You’re learning how to bear (be aware of, work with) many realities at once. At times there’s a sense of longing, of shyness, a wistfulness. Things end. You sigh.

capricornCapricorn
December 21–January 20
You remain in observing mode a bit longer. In the meantime, group activities are on the agenda and you think warm food and friendships, beautiful surroundings and shared thoughts. You think peace-loving friendships, lively conversations, a bit of intimacy, bubbly things to drink. And you wonder whether to participate or not. You think of sitting by the hearth at home, reading books, baking, family all around. You choose your heart’s desire.

aquariusAquarius
January 21–February 18
You’re out in the world. Everyone sees you as attractive, charming, intelligent, responsible, in charge. People like you. You rub shoulders with those in power, in the know, positioned. Through social interactions you negotiate. It’s subtle. You’re affectionate as you see new opportunities arise. You’re successful because of your artistic talents. Heads turn as you walk by. Remember  what’s real and what’s not. Be real.

piscesPisces
February 19–March 20
Expand beyond the routine. People worldwide, of different disciplines, education and backgrounds hear, listen to and understand you. It’s important to allow art, entertainment and the exotic into your life. You’re part of creating the new cultural revolution. Group work becomes exceedingly important as it stabilizes your talents and gifts. Maintain health with focused intent for you are to build, with others, the new culture and civilization. Acupuncture.

I Was a Teenage Deadhead

Memories of life on tour, plus the truth about that legendary Santa Cruz Acid Test

I Build a Lighted House and Therein Dwell

Wednesday, June 24, Chiron turns stationary retrograde (we turn inward) at 21.33 degrees Pisces. We usually speak of “retrograde” when referring to Mercury. But all planets retrograde. Next month in July, Venus retrogrades. What is Chiron retrograde? Chiron represents the wound within all of us. Wounds have purpose. They sensitize us; make us aware of pain and suffering. Through our wounds we develop compassion. Through compassion we become whole (holy) again. Chiron helps develop these states of consciousness. Everyone carries a wound. Everyone carries family wounds (family astrology tracks the astrological “DNA” through generations). Chiron wounds are deep within. We’re often not aware of them until Chiron retrogrades. Then the wounds (through pain, hurt, sadness, suffering) become apparent. They seem to break us open emotionally, psychologically. Painful events from the past are remembered. They are brought to the present for healing. Through experiencing, talking about and deeply feeling what is hurting us, healing takes place. We begin to understand and bring healing to others. All week, Jupiter and Venus move closer together in the sky. They meet in Leo at the full moon, Cancer solar festival, on Wednesday, July 1. The Cancer keynote is, “I build a lighted house and therein dwell.” The soul’s light has finally penetrated the “womb” of matter. The New Group of World Servers is to radiate this light. At the end of each sign are keywords to use and remember during the Chiron retrograde.

Kickin' Chicken

Local kitchen alchemist Justin Williams is fast becoming a cult flavor master. His late-night wizardry, which began last fall delivering mainly to starving UCSC students, is catching on with taste buds beyond campus. Kickin’ Chicken delivers its spicy-sweet fried chicken and waffles to Westside residents between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. nightly. Or you can catch him and his brother and sister, Candice and Danny Mendoza, serving it up at their “Sunday Mass” at the Santa Cruz Food Lounge at 1001 Center St. in Santa Cruz. Using sous vide, a French method of cooking chicken in a water bath at a tightly controlled temperature, they then flash fry it for an amazingly crispy coat. Candice Mendoza spoke to GT about Kickin’ Chicken’s rise.

Pelican Ranch Winery

The most popular red wines found on store shelves are also those most commonly known, such as Pinot, Zinfandel and Merlot. But when you come across a more unusual varietal, like Pelican Ranch Winery’s Cinsault ($19), it opens up a whole new world. Cinsault is a grape that can tolerate heat, so it is found in countries with warmer climes such as Morocco, Algeria, Lebanon, and France. It’s rare in California but grows well in places like Lodi—Silvaspoons Vineyard in this particular case—where it’s hot and dry. Often used as a blending grape, the silky Cinsault is just fine on its own.
