Year of the White Metal Rabbit

RisaNewSThe Chinese New Year Spring Festival will be celebrated for the next two weeks, till February 18th, the Full moon Chinese Lantern Festival (visit the Om Gallery, Downtown Santa Cruz, to prepare for your Lantern Festival party). Chinese astrology, based on the moon/lunar cycle, begins at the 2nd new moon after winter solstice (Feb, 2, Groundhog Day) and ends with the Lantern Festival two weeks later at the full moon (Feb. 18). 2011 is the year of the white metal rabbit. We are to look at the inner nature of rabbit and for the year, adopt those virtues—graciousness, sensitivity, gentleness, concentration, diplomacy, culture, manners, being reserved, scholarly, participating in study and intellectual activities. Rabbits are non-competitive and non-aggressive. A rabbit environment contains peace and comfort. This care of the environment nurtures others. We are to emphasize small details, be attentive to color, sound, design, balance, good food and conversation. The lifestyle of a rabbit is conservative, security important. Rabbits are serious, persevering and very capable, calm and compassionate, charismatic and tactful, and able to be trusted. Everyone will need tenderness. These are tall orders for humans.
Rabbit years (of birth) are 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, or 2011. Rabbits are devoted partners in relationships. The Year of the Rabbit is focuses on family, home, diplomacy, artistic pursuits and creating Goodwill and Right Relations, which bring forth peacefulness. Internationally, nations may turn inward, close their borders, protect against intrusions by other countries and ideologies. It will be a year of delicate business dealings in which complex negotiations and diplomacy will be necessary.

Esoteric Astrology as News for the week of Feb. 3–9, 2011 For Sun and Rising Signs

ariesAries-March 21–April 20
Great opportunities, improvements, advantages continue to occur in you life and so your ambition for success spirals. Progress is assured if you pace yourself and are eager for others’ success along with your own. But most important to determine your effectiveness will be completing all jobs and fulfilling all promises. So be careful what you begin and promise.

taurusTaurus
April 21–May 21
You have energy, ambition, desires and aspirations to achieve a high level of leadership helping people understand how to create a group mind, work together and build true community with the template of sharing at the center. People, certain ones, learn from you by watching you. Therefore, it’s not good to constantly hide away behind the scenes, not answering your phone anymore. God’s calling, actually.

geminiGemini
May 22–June 20
You continue to want to break away from your regular life. This is so strong within you I don’t know how you’re coping with it anymore. There are possibly very deep belief systems keeping you from making a change, even temporarily. Would you know what these are? Perhaps a bit of pondering upon this would help.
The reality is you’re free. And the call is clarion clear.

cancerCancer
June 21–July 20
Are there difficulties and tensions being experienced within certain relationships? Are there conflicts arising either externally or internally with those close to you or perhaps with friends? If this continues for too much longer, the roots of the difficulty will either get lost or become concretized and hurts will not be able to be healed. Something’s off balance. You need (to see, hear) the whole truth. Then you need to accept it. You can.

leoLeo
July 21–August 22
Are you in touch with family? Are you entertaining a bit here and there? Are you called to be creative while tending to a segment of society many don’t consider important? Are you gathering slowly around yourself a group of like-minded people to help in this task? Something with a wise one, something cultural catches your attention. You will think back into the past for a while. About relationships. And certain trees.

virgoVirgo
August 23–September 22
You seek practical solutions to a creative problem. To do this you step into the future, find ways to work that are unusual, innovative, original, modern & novel. Be careful in your daily movements and with health. There’s a vulnerability that can create inflammation. Turmeric, curries, East Indian foods, dahls, kitchari—all are beneficial for your well-being now. Make all working conditions easy for everyone.

libraLibra
September 23–October 22
If someone were to observe closely in order to write a story about you they would see that you have created a strong ethic around the principles of justice, equality and cooperation. However, they will also see that there are areas in your life still waiting for you to incorporate these virtues. Libras want peacefulness in their lives. Do you know how to create it? It begins with the intentions for Goodwill, everywhere, with everyone. Someday … yes?

scorpioScorpio
October 23–November 21
How does your home feel to you these days? How does it look? Home is your foundation, as a child and later as an adult. It is your refuge, a place to leave, a destination to come back to. Is your home providing these? Do you sense the need for a new home, one that encompasses community (living)? What duties keep you away from home? What new foundations, based on future trends, do you need for you to feel home? Where is home?

saggSagittarius
November 22–December 20
Sagittarians could definitely get pregnant this year. Not just or only with a child. Pregnant with a new state of awareness, gestating, growing larger as each week unfolds. This state concerns creativity, children, romance. Things happen this year unexpectedly, without warning, popping up here and there when you’re not looking. Perhaps new artwork or a new book is due (to be painted, written, published, contemplated). Something’s coming.

capricornCapricorn
December 21–January 20
A very interesting situation is beginning to occur with you and will continue for the next six months. You’ve been called to serve. In whatever area or capacity you find yourself, this is your area of service and serving. What you will learn in the coming months is while serving others not to forget you’re also serving yourself. You are learning more and more. Something will occur concerning where you live. Something good and beautiful.

aquariusAquarius
January 21–February 18
You possess an extraordinary amount of knowledge and artistic endeavor. This coming year even more will arrive. You will be busy learning how to organize and classify, discriminate and categorize what data is needed for the future, and what to eliminate. It may feel like chaos. Know that chaos is the first step toward a new harmony. Connections with others will increase. Love will, too.

piscesPisces
February 19–March 20
Perhaps for the first time you are beginning to be in touch with the cycles of the seasons. You are beginning to feel the different levels of hope within the energies of each sign, each month. You are becoming aware of the wisdom of the earth, the kingdoms, the interconnectedness between earth and heaven. Not intuitively, but in your body. Your values change, expand. So does your self-worth. A star above you shines.

The Peace Equation

Sunday is the United Nations’ International Day of Peace, a global peace-building day when nations, leaders, governments, communities and individuals are invited to end conflict, cease hostilities, creat 24 hours of non-violence and promote goodwill. Monday is Autumn equinox as the Sun enters Libra (right relations with all of life). The Soul Year now begins. We work in the dark part of the year (Persephone underground) preparing for the new light of winter solstice. Tuesday to Wednesday is the Virgo new moon festival. We know two things about peace. “The absence of war does not signify peace.” And “Peace is an ongoing process.” In its peace-building emphasis, the UNIDP, through education, attempts to create a “culture of peace, understanding and tolerance”. Esoterically we are reminded of the peace equation: “Intentions for goodwill (and acting upon this intention) create right relations with all earth’s kingdoms which create (the ongoing process of) peace on earth.” At noon on Sunday, in all time zones, millions of participating groups will observe a moment of silence for peace on earth. Bells will ring, candles will be lit, and doves released as the New Group of World Servers recite the Great Invocation (humanity’s mantram of direction). To connect with others around the world see www.cultureofpeace.org    Let us join together with the mother (Virgo). Goodwill to all, let peace prevail on earth. The dove is the symbol for the day.

Best of Santa Cruz County

The 2013 Santa Cruz County Readers' Poll and Critics’ Picks It’s our biggest issue of the year, and in it, your votes—more than 6,500 of them—determined the winners of The Best of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll. New to the long list of local restaurants, shops and other notables that captured your interest: Best Beer Selection, Best Locally Owned Business, Best Customer Service and Best Marijuana Dispensary. In the meantime, many readers were ever so chatty online about potential new categories. Some of the suggestions that stood out: Best Teen Program and Best Web Design/Designer. But what about: Dog Park, Church, Hotel, Local Farm, Therapist (I second that!) or Sports Bar—not to be confused with Bra. Our favorite suggestion: Best Act of Kindness—one reader noted Café Gratitude and the free meals it offered to the Santa Cruz Police Department in the aftermath of recent crimes. Perhaps some of these can be woven into next year’s ballot, so stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy the following pages and take note of our Critics’ Picks, too, beginning on page 91. A big thanks for voting—and for reading—and an even bigger congratulations to all of the winners. Enjoy.  -Greg Archer, EditorBest of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll INDEX

Santa Clara Wine Trail

My memories of growing up in England include my mother pouring port after Sunday dinner—and sometimes a glass of sherry before dinner. My family didn’t drink much wine back then, but we certainly made up for it with the port and sherry.
