Gratitude, Forgiveness, Clemency & Mercy: Thanksgiving in a Mercury Retrograde

RisaNewSThe Sun’s in Sagittarius, Mercury has retrograded, Thursday is Thanksgiving and Thursday night/Friday morning is a new moon, (partial) solar eclipse (something essential, complete, withdraws). As we either feast or fast (on Thanksgiving), Mercury (communication, thought, transporting ourselves here to there), is stationary retrograde (20 degrees Sag). Mercury retrogrades until Dec. 13th (4 degrees Sag). Holiday gifts purchased during Mercury retro are subject to misgivings, idle chatter and re-thinking. Which brings me to the thought of gifts in general. It’s not what we receive but what, how and why we give which is the real gift. A paradoxical concept we need to teach our children in order to create, foster and safeguard the foundational values of the new culture and civilization, the new Aquarian Sharing Society.
Mercury retrograde in Sag. Sagittarius is about travel, justice, journeys into cultures unfamiliar, a return to food our (grand)mothers made. Mercury retrograde produces inner activity - contemplation, reflection, retreat, research …”re” words. Rapprochement is activated during, a return to something incomplete, needing forgiveness, compassion, clemency and mercy. Traveling, we experience temporary delays. During Mercury retrogrades, to safeguard our well-being, we refrain from large purchases (homes, cars, appliances) and major planning. Instead, we review and reflect upon information gathered since Mercury’s last retro in August. As each retrograde occurs, our minds overflow (are overwhelmed) with information needing organization (and possible elimination). Then we are able to absorb the next three months of information till the next Mercury retro (March 12, 2012). Let us all be grateful for everything in our world and in our lives.

Esoteric Astrology as News for the week of Nov 24–30, 2011 For Sun and Rising Signs

ariesAries-March 21–April 20
It’s most important to find the “pause that refreshes” because there’s such an onrush of activity, ideas and ideals wanting to travel and discovering new realities that details, important to your well-being, may be missed. It’s also time to review your values, sense of justice, ideas of what’s occurring the world, and how you are aiding humanity’s endeavors in building the new society. What are your visions?

taurusTaurus
April 21–May 21
You continue to tend to the well being of others. Sometimes you remember to care for yourself. You remember that you are a resource and if you as resource are not tended to well enough, you no longer can be a resource for others. Ideas for the new reality continue to appear. Their manifestation into form has been elusive. Now you see the new world coming forth as the new physics. This is the new Aquarian art, too.

geminiGemini
May 22–June 20
It’s most important to reflect upon what your relationship is based upon. Include all relationships, but begin with your most intimate. It might be that you consider what’s taken for granted, what’s not understood, what allows you to be most truthful and what is occurring about moving, relocating and rethinking resources? A new path comes forth and a new message within the relationship. You must listen perceptively.

cancerCancer
June 21–July 20
Your idea of a schedule runs quickly out the back door and you suddenly find yourself with no routines, plans or the ability to take control of daily events. Anything you’ve thought of doing simply melts into states of chaos seeking the next level of harmony but the harmony’s not manifesting for a while. The best thing to do is to prepare nurturing foods. Offer this food to others. They will receive it as goodness from the heavens. You are that.

leoLeo
July 21–August 22
The past year has been rather serious, structured to keep you in a state of working discipline. This new moon with its eclipse calls you to a state of ease, amusement, recreation, children, pleasure, creativity, games, fun, enjoyment and being with others who think as you think. A previous lover/relationship is in your thoughts, too. Perhaps they show up at your door. Will you let them into your life again?

virgoVirgo
August 23–September 22
Family and parents, the foundations of your life, your childhood, beliefs learned while young and carried into the present time will be on your mind for the purpose of appraising, cleansing, clearing, and eliminating what’s no longer useful. Be aware that moodiness, brooding, and, perhaps, intense feelings, will arise. Assess these with intelligence and careful observation. They will pass.

libraLibra
September 23–October 22
It’s good to be in touch with siblings, to communicate, take trips, have conversations with them, sharing news, family gossip, hopes, wishes, dreams and ideas. Be aware that even when doing so, information may get trapped inside of your head or heart or information may be misconstrued. Communicate anyway with the intention to make contact, which releases Love. Your family misses and loves you.

scorpioScorpio
October 23–November 21
The entire world’s in a state of reorientation, a state you know well for you experience it endlessly. The whole world is in a Scorpio state of transformation, testing, of dying ... so that the new world can come forth. You’re importance in this great shift is the fact that your research abilities become the core of the new culture and civilization. What are your present tasks? What are you using your resources for?

saggSagittarius
November 22–December 20
There’s an opportunity now, not wanting to waste a moment of life, to redefine yourself, your identity and purpose. You’re able to change your mind about who you (think you) are and how you see yourself. Be aware that your presence is very impactful to others around you. Issues you thought were complete, reappear for reassessment. A new rhythm is appearing. Find some music and enter it. Remain there.

capricornCapricorn
December 21–January 20
You may feel behind a curtain in a theatre, waiting in the wings for new realities to appear. It’s like planting a garden—lovely arugula, kales, onions, winter greens, thyme, oregano, parsley—waiting each day for the first green shoots. Everything on inner levels is being restructured. You feel this but it hasn’t manifested in your outer world. Be as reclusive as possible to allow these new roots of new reality to anchor, become strong.

aquariusAquarius
January 21–February 18
In the following weeks you will discover your true friends, what groups truly support your endeavors and whom you can turn to for nurturance, needs and simple friendship. So many of humanity are mis-informed. Allow yourself to provide humanity true information so that you become part of the education of humanity. You will assess your life’s journey. When traveling, follow scrupulously the rules of the road. For safety.

piscesPisces
February 19–March 20
Some Pisces will ponder upon writing a book, some may consider publishing or will be contacted by publishers. Considering these ideas without making final decisions. Acknowledgements and recognitions may come forth unexpectedly. Careful of miscommunication to and with the public. Tend to previous tasks and be careful of your public image. You will continue to work with focused consistency. Healing begins.

The Peace Equation

Sunday is the United Nations’ International Day of Peace, a global peace-building day when nations, leaders, governments, communities and individuals are invited to end conflict, cease hostilities, creat 24 hours of non-violence and promote goodwill. Monday is Autumn equinox as the Sun enters Libra (right relations with all of life). The Soul Year now begins. We work in the dark part of the year (Persephone underground) preparing for the new light of winter solstice. Tuesday to Wednesday is the Virgo new moon festival. We know two things about peace. “The absence of war does not signify peace.” And “Peace is an ongoing process.” In its peace-building emphasis, the UNIDP, through education, attempts to create a “culture of peace, understanding and tolerance”. Esoterically we are reminded of the peace equation: “Intentions for goodwill (and acting upon this intention) create right relations with all earth’s kingdoms which create (the ongoing process of) peace on earth.” At noon on Sunday, in all time zones, millions of participating groups will observe a moment of silence for peace on earth. Bells will ring, candles will be lit, and doves released as the New Group of World Servers recite the Great Invocation (humanity’s mantram of direction). To connect with others around the world see www.cultureofpeace.org    Let us join together with the mother (Virgo). Goodwill to all, let peace prevail on earth. The dove is the symbol for the day.

Best of Santa Cruz County

The 2013 Santa Cruz County Readers' Poll and Critics’ Picks It’s our biggest issue of the year, and in it, your votes—more than 6,500 of them—determined the winners of The Best of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll. New to the long list of local restaurants, shops and other notables that captured your interest: Best Beer Selection, Best Locally Owned Business, Best Customer Service and Best Marijuana Dispensary. In the meantime, many readers were ever so chatty online about potential new categories. Some of the suggestions that stood out: Best Teen Program and Best Web Design/Designer. But what about: Dog Park, Church, Hotel, Local Farm, Therapist (I second that!) or Sports Bar—not to be confused with Bra. Our favorite suggestion: Best Act of Kindness—one reader noted Café Gratitude and the free meals it offered to the Santa Cruz Police Department in the aftermath of recent crimes. Perhaps some of these can be woven into next year’s ballot, so stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy the following pages and take note of our Critics’ Picks, too, beginning on page 91. A big thanks for voting—and for reading—and an even bigger congratulations to all of the winners. Enjoy.  -Greg Archer, EditorBest of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll INDEX

Santa Clara Wine Trail

My memories of growing up in England include my mother pouring port after Sunday dinner—and sometimes a glass of sherry before dinner. My family didn’t drink much wine back then, but we certainly made up for it with the port and sherry.
