Sagittarius, Venus, Gratitude

RisaNewSSaturday Sun enters Sagittarius. The energies shift from Scorpio’s deep and transformative waters onto the “plains of Sagittarius”. Sag is the rider on a white horse, eyes focused entirely upon the mountain peaks of Capricorn (Initiation) ahead. Like Scorpio, Sagittarius is a “disciple.” Adventure, luck and optimism, joy and the beginnings of gratitude are the hallmarks of Sagittarius.
Venus this week captures our energy, interacting daily with other planets. Thursday, Venus squares Mars and relationships turn into battlegrounds, rainstorms and passionate encounters occur. Sunday Venus joins Ceres and nurturing becomes the main principle mentally and in the heart. Monday Venus squares Jupiter and our values come into question, especially money. We’ll need to take a different path and bring something of value into form and matter. Tuesday evening Venus squares Chiron and our wounds are felt. We seek the most holistic methods to tend to what hurts. The old ways (direction of energy) won’t work anymore. Wednesday Venus trines Uranus - a brilliant aspect – with everyone becoming social and many discussing how to contribute to the betterment of the world; how to bring forth, with intelligence and heart, the new culture and civilization.
It’s time to give thanks … letting our gratitude be the light in the season of darkness.
ARIES: Gradually certain spiritual components and aspiration will enter your consciousness. They will work into and align with your goals, many of which are appearing now in great numbers. It’s good to give thanks for your great mind and for the transformative affect you have on those you meet in the world. Be aware that you are now and for a long time a force that influences others. You must link that force with love. And gratitude.

TAURUS: You realize that you must conserve your strength, rest whenever possible, and economize all actions throughout the day. This is very important for the well being of all that you are to bring forth for the greater good. It’s also good to attempt to consider what assets you have perhaps in storage, in boxes, in drawers, safes, or simply lying about on tabletops. These resources await your gratitude and attention. Careful with impatience.

GEMINI: You begin to sense a certain level of dignity, self-confidence and self-assurance in relations with others. It’s as if the sun has begun to shine on all your interactions. You begin to cooperate more and hide less, allow changes of environment to expand your interests, and realize that even enemies and those you don’t like have a certain purpose in your life’s work. Tend to commitments, consider suggestions and learn how to better be a friend.

CANCER: Daily routines begin to take precedence in terms of diet and health, scheduling tasks and chores, and utilizing your energy more effectively. You’re grateful for this awareness. It allows you to nourish yourself while also ordering and organizing the environment. Perhaps your garden called you to attention and the miracle that each plant presents has shifted your emphasis. Cultivating your garden you are in love again.

LEO: Your abilities are in the spotlight for everyone realizes that without you the work would not be carefully tended to and accomplished. There’s praise for your ongoing accomplishments, praise for the connections you make and for the important people and events you cultivate. In return be sure to provide even greater praise for everyone around you. This brings forth pleasure, a caring and a love not often experienced. Soon you will be more serious.

VIRGO: Tend to family, parents and elders in all ways and the principle of caring will be returned a hundred-fold. Perhaps you feel unrecognized or unseen during these present times. However, this will not last, you will emerge out from under that umbrella into the light of day and there will be new projects to focus on. Now the groundwork is being created. Like seeds under ground sprouting new shoots, your life settles into a new security.

LIBRA: A new self-reliance appears and a new practicality. You reserve your energy for important matters; tend to money with confidence, firmness and decisiveness. Do not overlook your health, become overworked or let your physical body become cold. Tend to yourself and all parts of your life very carefully. Later you will plan holiday parties, inviting people to your home. I see flowers all over your house.

SCORPIO: Whatever you ask for seems to come your way. You simply need to state your needs and whatever it is gallops toward you. Be careful therefore what you are seeking. I say again to tend to money and communicative matters carefully. With the first be sure to give to those in need. With the second use speech for the purpose of radiating goodwill into the world. These take discipline, which you possess more than most. Something secret or spiritual summons you.

SAGITTARIUS: There may be a new friendship you’re pursuing and this interaction becomes a learning and a lesson. Some Sag’s are thinking about or seeking their fathers, some become fathers and others seek teachers and teachings that will bring harmony and balance into their lives. All Sags are in a state of disequilibrium. This is because new goals are being formed. They’re not visible yet. But in time they will appear. Hush now, and just be grateful.

CAPRICORN: Assessing what you have and being ever thankful creates and expansion of inner happiness and joy. Then life is almost overabundant. This cultivation of abundance prepares you for the transformations that will gradually occur to all Capricorns. This way of seeing and experiencing life as abundant aids others as they seek to understand life (filled with both happiness and suffering). You know both. Now actively cultivate stewardship toward all of life. You will teach that love underlies everything.

AQUARIUS: For two-and-a half-years or more you will attempt to read more, study and expand your mind, which brings new prospects, new goals and new people into your life. You recently find yourself making compromises. Although it’s unusual, you feel secure enough in your willingness to help others. Aquarius is about serving humanity and you are learning this. Everyone becomes your friend.

PISCES: Concerned with the future and experiencing constant change you focus intently on work in order to feel responsible and to create order and constancy in your life. However the changes continue, the future is distant, things dissolve away and health becomes something to tend to. Maintain physical warmth (don’t get cold), create a daily exercise schedule, walk in the sun’s light each day, and maintain a direct and constant contact with Divinity.

The Peace Equation

Sunday is the United Nations’ International Day of Peace, a global peace-building day when nations, leaders, governments, communities and individuals are invited to end conflict, cease hostilities, creat 24 hours of non-violence and promote goodwill. Monday is Autumn equinox as the Sun enters Libra (right relations with all of life). The Soul Year now begins. We work in the dark part of the year (Persephone underground) preparing for the new light of winter solstice. Tuesday to Wednesday is the Virgo new moon festival. We know two things about peace. “The absence of war does not signify peace.” And “Peace is an ongoing process.” In its peace-building emphasis, the UNIDP, through education, attempts to create a “culture of peace, understanding and tolerance”. Esoterically we are reminded of the peace equation: “Intentions for goodwill (and acting upon this intention) create right relations with all earth’s kingdoms which create (the ongoing process of) peace on earth.” At noon on Sunday, in all time zones, millions of participating groups will observe a moment of silence for peace on earth. Bells will ring, candles will be lit, and doves released as the New Group of World Servers recite the Great Invocation (humanity’s mantram of direction). To connect with others around the world see www.cultureofpeace.org    Let us join together with the mother (Virgo). Goodwill to all, let peace prevail on earth. The dove is the symbol for the day.

Best of Santa Cruz County

The 2013 Santa Cruz County Readers' Poll and Critics’ Picks It’s our biggest issue of the year, and in it, your votes—more than 6,500 of them—determined the winners of The Best of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll. New to the long list of local restaurants, shops and other notables that captured your interest: Best Beer Selection, Best Locally Owned Business, Best Customer Service and Best Marijuana Dispensary. In the meantime, many readers were ever so chatty online about potential new categories. Some of the suggestions that stood out: Best Teen Program and Best Web Design/Designer. But what about: Dog Park, Church, Hotel, Local Farm, Therapist (I second that!) or Sports Bar—not to be confused with Bra. Our favorite suggestion: Best Act of Kindness—one reader noted Café Gratitude and the free meals it offered to the Santa Cruz Police Department in the aftermath of recent crimes. Perhaps some of these can be woven into next year’s ballot, so stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy the following pages and take note of our Critics’ Picks, too, beginning on page 91. A big thanks for voting—and for reading—and an even bigger congratulations to all of the winners. Enjoy.  -Greg Archer, EditorBest of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll INDEX

Santa Clara Wine Trail

My memories of growing up in England include my mother pouring port after Sunday dinner—and sometimes a glass of sherry before dinner. My family didn’t drink much wine back then, but we certainly made up for it with the port and sherry.
