Sign of Silence

RisaNewSLet’s discover a bit more about Sagittarius … a sign often hidden in the preparations of Hanukkah, winter solstice and Christmas. Sagittarius is associated with vision, aspiration and a one-pointed direction toward the goals of service and saviorship (Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces). Sagittarius learns the “right use of the arrows of thought (Sag’s great test), restraint of speech, and consequent harmlessness resulting in liberation. Sag is esoterically one of the “signs of silence.” Sagittarius is a potent sign due to its one-pointed focus on goals, silence and that it is the time and sign immediately preceding the new light at winter solstice representing the birth of the Holy Child. Sagittarius seeks the “spirit of truth, emerging from individual revelation.” Three constellations make up Sa —Lyra, the seven-stringed harp; Ara, the altar; and Draco serpent of wisdom. Two other constellations surround these three—Aquila, the eagle (Spirit) and Cygnus, the swan (Soul). Sag is known for its extraordinary ability with music (from Lyra) and its photographic eye (from Aquila).

Saturday is the first day of Hanukkah and feast days of Santa Lucia and Our Lady of Guadalupe. Wednesday is the last new moon, 25 degrees Sag, of the year. Astrology news alert! Mercury’s in Capricorn, Mars retro begins next week followed by retro Mercury! Click Read More to see Horoscopes >

ARIES (March 21-April 20) Will you be traveling? Are you thinking of new professional ideas and realities? Do you feel pressured to step up onto the next rung of the ladder? Do you seek a religious or spiritual reality but don’t quite know what to choose? Every part of you is in the world, except for discipline and structure (Saturn) attempting to bring order to relationships. Tend to them carefully. They will see you to the end.

TAURUS
(April 21-May 21) You are perhaps seeking here and there for resources to last a long time so you can feel safe and secure and continue your important work. Looking far and wide is best because those resources are out there somewhere. Or perhaps they’re hiding in closets and drawers, storage units and garages (yours). Bringing them out into the open would be good. Out into the fresh air to assess their value. You are actually rich.

GEMINI
(May 22-June 20) On your mind are relationships, one in particular, money and how it’s being used practically, and whether to travel or not (it looks iffy). Your relationship is OK if you tend to it a bit more. Your money needs a practical reference point, needs to be in a local credit union, needs to be invested in precious metals and land. Money and relationships go hand in hand. What do your partner and friends think about the present monetary situation?

CANCER
(June 21-July 20) You’ll find yourself embarking upon new goals, meeting those goals and discovering others. These goals affect your daily life and how you will be living in the future. Share your goals with others, communicating with them in plain language the practicality of planning for the future. You are very concerned about your resources and money. Tuck all your money into your goals. Then it will be useful, practical and transformed.

LEO
(July 21-Aug. 22)  Your energy’s high, trajectory’s unlimited, color’s red, and your identity is galloping toward far away goals. Nothing can stop you. However you’ll be restrained if imbalances or disharmony occur. Choose travel as an art form. Take camera, art supplies, and a horse along (if you can). Several dog companions will do if a horse isn’t available. There’s something you’ve wished to do for a long time. You’ll return to the place where your heart resides.

VIRGO
(Aug. 23-Sept. 22)  Have you new plans and goals for your home? Are you feeling restrained by a lack of something? Are you spending much time and energy on things unseen? Do they rest in your heart, unspoken and in longing? It would be good if you concentrated on the season’s festivities by making your home cheerful and welcoming, filled with lights and nature. Do things differently this year. Joy comes on little cat feet.

LIBRA
(Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Are you invited to or thinking about traveling this holiday? Internally are you seeking the truth of your many beliefs? A deep transformative change penetrates your heart/mind and many beliefs begin to have no validity. Disconcerting at first, you’re actually being led to truths you were previously incapable of understanding. As beliefs break down, revealed will be a greater capacity to (give/receive) love. You will then “be of love a little more careful than of everything” (e.e. cummings).

SCORPIO
(Oct. 23-Nov. 21) It’s time to ponder upon and then finally articulate goals concerning money in order to make your future seem safe and practical. You don’t want to be wounded by not preparing adequately. Your mind, moving equally between myth and the real world, needs to concentrate on building adequate resources for the times to come. These resources will not be only for yourself but others will join you—for you have the stamina to face great challenges. Are you comprehending?

SAGITTARIUS
(Nov. 22-Dec. 20) The entire introduction is about you. Read it slowly many times so its esoteric significances are absorbed and a new identity can emerge about who you are. As you seek truth and the symphony of the universe, as you seek justice along with trying to feel joy, it’s most important to acknowledge you are always seeking the goals ahead. So what are they now? You don’t know? What would you like them to be? Seek swans.

CAPRICORN
(Dec. 21-Jan. 20)  You stand within inner and outer realities, deeply personal and yet out in the world where humanity resides. There’s much responsibility and work accomplished morning till night. At day’s end you exhaustedly fall into bed, hoping sleep will bring physical, emotional and mental balance. Enough sleep does if there are no lights on during the night to interrupt your sleep cycle. Wear a mask if necessary. And drink more water.

AQUARIUS
(Jan. 21-Feb. 18) Our outer reality is connected with our inner reality. What occurs in our outer life is based on what we believe, envision, have intentions for and where we place our focus. You are aware, of course, that humanity, which you represent, is to bring forth the new culture and civilization, the new world order and learn about the Aquarian Laws & Principles and visions under which the new culture will emerge. What are your visions?

PISCES
(Feb.19-March 20)  Each day there’s a new understanding occurring which leads to revelation. That actually is an esoteric rule—revelation emerges from understanding. How does understanding come forth? From suffering, from grief and feelings of despair. You understand this line of poetry from Dante’s Divine Comedy “In the middle of the journey of my life, I came to a dark wood and found myself and my way lost.” Keep walking.

Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, occurs this year during Libra, the sign of creating right relations with all aspects life and with earth’s kingdoms. We contemplate (the Libra meditation) forgiveness, which means, “to give for another.” Forgiveness is not pardon. It’s a sacrifice (fire in the heart, giving from the heart). Forgiveness is giving up for the good of the other. This is the law of evolution (the path of return).

Best of Santa Cruz County

The 2013 Santa Cruz County Readers' Poll and Critics’ Picks It’s our biggest issue of the year, and in it, your votes—more than 6,500 of them—determined the winners of The Best of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll. New to the long list of local restaurants, shops and other notables that captured your interest: Best Beer Selection, Best Locally Owned Business, Best Customer Service and Best Marijuana Dispensary. In the meantime, many readers were ever so chatty online about potential new categories. Some of the suggestions that stood out: Best Teen Program and Best Web Design/Designer. But what about: Dog Park, Church, Hotel, Local Farm, Therapist (I second that!) or Sports Bar—not to be confused with Bra. Our favorite suggestion: Best Act of Kindness—one reader noted Café Gratitude and the free meals it offered to the Santa Cruz Police Department in the aftermath of recent crimes. Perhaps some of these can be woven into next year’s ballot, so stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy the following pages and take note of our Critics’ Picks, too, beginning on page 91. A big thanks for voting—and for reading—and an even bigger congratulations to all of the winners. Enjoy.  -Greg Archer, EditorBest of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll INDEX

Apricot Wine for Dessert

Thomas Kruse Winery, a participant in the new Santa Clara Wine Trail, has been around for a long time—since 1971, to be exact. When our little group arrived to try some wine at the Kruses’ low-key tasting room, Thomas Kruse and his wife Karen were there to greet us. Theirs is a small operation, and they’re proud to offer quality wine at affordable prices. “Because we are small and low-tech, it’s easy to relate to the whole winemaking process,” says Karen—and the Kruses take pride in making wine “just like it has been made for centuries.”
