Food

RisaBefore Virgo Sun is over for the year, with retrograde Mercury re-entering Virgo Sept. 17 (Mercury squares Pluto), with Tuesday’s 3rd Saturn opposite Uranus (revolution and reorganization in the food industry) and Saturn presently in Virgo (structure of our food systems) till entering Libra (relationship and economic housecleaning) Oct. 29, it’s important to look at the present health of our food (health and food are Virgo subjects) industry. Review is a retrograde (which Mercury will be until Sept. 28) task.

From research, examination and analysis of the present U.S. food situation we realize our food (Virgo) system isn’t working and that a restructuring (Saturn) of our food’s quality, sources and distribution is immediately needed. Let’s look at some information. It seems major U.S. corporations actually own much of our organic foods (farms); a handful of corporations own most of the seed companies; large organic health food stores may not be what they seem; many people are no longer cooking; and few families eat together. It is important for us to be informed. At Night Light News I have listed various websites to read about the state of our food industry.

The issues are energy production and distribution. In the Transition Town Movement, emerging from Permaculture design, there is a focus on creative adaptations leading to a sustainable future and one of the major subjects is agriculture and food production.

Food quality, production and distribution and the changes needed fall under the jurisdiction of Virgo, Saturn in Virgo and Saturn opposite Uranus (revolution of present structures). As Pluto (transformation) in Capricorn (business as usual) turns direct Friday, Sept. 11, the changes needed will move forward. Read much more at nightlightnews.com.

ARIES (March 21-April 20) What’s occurring at home, and what are the conflicts? There’s a sense of responsibility, a heaviness perhaps with all the work needing to begin or be completed. You will have help even while feeling quite alone. Work seems like it’s shifting daily and that too is a pressure. Gather friends, ask for help and know the relentless changes are preparing you for later leadership. You’ll know what to do.

TAURUS (April 21-May 21) Having been freed from a previous responsibility and service you now step into newer and vaster states of engagements and authority. You become attentive to goals and friendships. Clearly you will make intelligent decisions even though there is an added tension developing for everyone, everywhere. It’s the sign of the times and the challenge of this tension brings us to attention of matters close at hand.

GEMINI (May 22-June 20) The issues you’re facing now allow you to retreat into your home. There you decide how much of yourself can be in the world and how much must stay behind the scenes. You must now heal and build your immune system. This is an important time of focus on your innermost self. You are strong and thus capable of accomplishing all required work.

CANCER (June 21-July 20) Seek, ask for and share intelligent ideas and conversations with others. This stimulates your mind and heart, soothes any wounds you harbor about your intellectual abilities, and brings a foundation to all relationships. If there seems to be an overall tiredness, heed this as the need for more sleep, more vitamin B, adrenal support, and extra exercise. Careful of spending on unneeded items.

LEO (July 21-Aug. 22) You many be working alone. For some Leos this isn’t unusual. For others they may feel stranded and not know why no one’s calling. This is temporary. It’s a time of retreat, of gathering your necessary energy and tending to your home, finances, and daily life of sorting, organizing, reviewing and removing what is no longer needed. This includes belief systems that do not bring you happiness and joy. What are they? Make a list.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Some Virgos, during this last year, have become thinner. Some feel an overwhelming pressure to do something—more work, take on more responsibility, climb ladders of success, create structures and strategies that bring order to daily life. Some Virgos wonder about the future, worrying that since there is no clear path they are lost. These are the times when gardening brings us to the here and now, obliterates shadows of doubt, and create a motivation to work with the unseen world.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Your work world and daily life have been in a state of change for the past seven years. Sometime this week another restructuring will occur, a sort of revolution that brings forth new agendas, ideas and programs followed through in coming months. Speak with others of your needs, hopes, wishes and the wounds that hurt. Sharing thoughts allows a new self-identity to form.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Do be careful of spoken opinions and judgments, of sharing controversial ideas with those who do not share your views. Be careful with how you speak with friends, those living at a distance from you, and those with different cultural backgrounds. I would not travel at this time unless it’s very necessary. Be cautious, be concerned and very aware of all financial transactions. This is for the next seventeen years.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 20) Before launching yourself into a new adventure take the time to tend to both family and loved ones and those you work with, especially employers. Be your extra charming self, make contact, assure them of your ceaseless devotion (to both family and work), and provide them with the care they will understand. This allows you the freedom and liberty your upcoming journey, endeavors and venture require.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21-Jan. 20) Do all you can to allow communication to flow easily. There may be misunderstanding all around, breakdowns in how people listen or feel heard. Everyone’s ability to speak seems turned around. This is particularly emphasized within relationships, finances and people at work. Be the harmonizer; listen well and carefully. Daily reality seems somehow on the precipice of falling down. It is but you are capable of easing yourself through it.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 21-Feb. 18) Do you feel as if life has slowed down, money is hidden away somewhere not to be found, there’s a sense of restriction letting yourself be seen, and decisions are difficult to bring forth? These situations are occurring because new realities are about to emerge. Previous realities are still present but this is temporary. Visualize daily all that you want and need. This creates a magnet that draws to you new ideas, values and resources.

PISCES (Feb.19-March 20) Tend to all duties and responsibilities, especially at home which needs total reordering and reorganization. Set aside the time to make your environments clear and clean so that a deeper creativity can come forth. You are concerned with your domestic situation and at times there is a great tension. You also may be considering great changes in the environments you live and work in.

We Can Rebuild You

A look back at how downtown Santa Cruz recovered from the 1989 earthquake

International Earth Day—Mother Earth Day

Every April 22, humanity celebrates International Mother Earth Day and Earth Day. As more than a billion people participate in Earth Day activities every year, Earth Day has become the world’s largest civic observance. The massive concern to build right relations between humanity and the living being we call Earth is evidence of humanity’s love of the Mother. In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed April 22 International Mother Earth Day, with a significant resolution affirming “the interdependence existing among human beings, other living species (the kingdoms—mineral, plant, animal and human) and the planet itself, the Earth which we all inhabit.” The Earth is our home. Celebrating Earth Day helps us define new emerging processes (economic, social, political) focused on the well-being of the kingdoms. Through these, humanity seeks to raise the quality of life, foster equality and begin to establish right relations with the Earth. We dedicate ourselves to bringing forth balance and a relationship of harmony with all of nature. Learn about planting a billion trees (the Canopy Project); participate in 1.5 billion acts of green. Disassociation (toward Earth) is no longer viable. We lose our connection to life itself. Participation is viable—an anchor, refuge and service for all of life on Earth. Visit earthday.org; harmonywithnatureun.org; and un.org/en/events/motherearthday for more information. From Farmers Almanac, “On Earth Day, enjoy the tonic of fresh air, contact with the soil, companionship with nature! Go barefooted. Walk through woods, find wildflowers and green moss. Remain outside, no matter the weather!” Nature, Earth’s most balanced kingdom, heals us. The New Group of World Servers is preparing for the May 3 Wesak Buddha Taurus solar festival. We prepare through asking for and offering forgiveness. Forgiveness purifies and like nature, heals.

Blown away by a Tuesday night dinner at Oswald

If you could live in Santa Cruz in any era besides now, which would you choose?

Probably the ’70s, because Santa Cruz is such a fly-your-freak-flag place. That was when free love and hippiness was in vogue. Shane Reber, Santa Cruz, Caretaker

Sarah’s Vineyard

Sarah’s Vineyard of Gilroy is known for crafting fine wines—and one of my all-time favorites is its Chardonnay. But this time, its Viognier has my vote.
