There’s plenty of buzz on La Bahia (see letters) but this week, the spotlight is on a bunch of culinary wizards that continue to make the Santa Cruz County dining scene, well, a “scene.” In the decade that I have been at the helm at GT, I continue to be impressed with the food industry here. The amount of creativity running through the veins of some of the foodies is downright impressive. But I also think about what it actually takes to maintain a restaurant, a catering business, a winery, even a wine bar like Cava in Capitola. (I was there last week for some fun.)

I think it was Rosanne Cash that said, “The key to change is to let go of fear.” I like that. But we’re complex humans, after all. Sometimes maybe it’s OK to have both—the change and the feeling that we typically want to avoid: fear. Actually, I propose we already feel the fear we’re wanting to bolt away from. In my interviews with acclaimed author and one-time local, Geneen Roth, I’ve discovered that there is a wild bit of empowerment that takes place the moment you step into that thing you so habitually want to avoid dealing with.

The shortest month of the year is coming to a close, so, are we really ready for the long haul? As in ... moving through the rest of 2011 with some insight and endurance? I always see the first few months of the year as an adjustment period. We’re getting over the holidays and trying to determine the pace and vibe of the year ahead. But once February ends, we’re really no longer in the honeymoon period of the new year—it’s time to get focused. Right? So, what are you focusing on? What are your goals?

Santa Cruz Restaurant Week

A huge part of Santa Cruz Restaurant Week has always been about offering a great dining experience for an affordable price. For some locals, the $25 flat-rate cost has provided the opportunity (or the excuse!) to try new spots, and indulge in Santa Cruz fine dining in a way they might have thought too pricey before.

 

Scorpio Sun, New Moon Eclipse, Mercury Direct

The Sun enters Scorpio’s mysteries Thursday under a new moon and partial solar eclipse (something essential has come to an end, its purpose completed). In Scorpio we harbor secrets, are devoted to something deep, dark and hidden. Sometimes it’s ourselves. We can bring great suspect to our assessment of others. Scorpio is the scorpion, the serpent and the eagle—three levels of development. As the serpent we take shelter in our beliefs. Sometimes we bite (or sting). The eagle vanquishes old beliefs through its sharp intellect, soaring high in the air, seeking to understand through perspective. Understanding releases us from the bondage of fear. The eagle is like the mother soothing feelings of mistrust, offering protection. Knowledge does this, too.
