Desal: Another Look
Not Worth the Trip?
Death, deadlines and desire. It sounds like the title of a summer read, but, no, the three Ds have been alive and kicking—at least in my circles—lately. Let’s work our way in from the back. Desire. One of the more memorable outings I had in college (ASU) was playing a drunk sailor, as well as being in the chorus of “Cabaret.” I also played a Nazi guard in another scene, to which my concerned Polish mother, having been through a bit of drama during WW II herself, moaned: “Oh, do you have to wear that damn uniform?” Well, at the time I had to. The play’s the thing, right, and if you know anything about the musical, “Cabaret,” then you already know how well it mixes the emotional intensities and desires of its characters with the haunting political changes happening in Germany in the ’30s.

Take Another Look
Can’t we just all talk things out? Well, we can. And, as writer John Malkin illuminates in this week’s cover story, some locals are doing just that in the hopes of fueling a “restorative justice.” Think of it as the “art of sharing power and responsibility” all in an effort to create community. Santa Cruz is big on community, after all.  Send us your comments at [email protected]

Beyond 2012
Embracing ‘2012’
Wet Spots
You probably saw this coming: virtual music venues—it is the 21st century, after all—but what you may not have factored into the mix was how enterprising such a beast could be, especially when Santa Cruzans are behind the scenes creatively. That’s where Virtual Venues Network (VVN) comes in. Spearheaded by several locals, this concert-screenings business caters to a “closed-circuit network of clubs and college campuses” that participate in exclusive concert events. Think of it like Pay-Per-View with a twist. Now booming, VVN offers nightclubs, sports bars, colleges and theaters across the nation plenty of opportunities to unveil one-time virtual concerts from many prominent bands. Writer Damon Orion uncovers the unique journey the founders of VVN have taken, and what the future holds for the business model.

Mars Enters Scorpio: The Nine Tests

Over the years I’ve mentioned the nine tests of Mars and Scorpio. The tests are given to everyone—unawakened, beginning to awaken, and the awakened. The purpose is to test our strength, courage, ability to adapt, discriminate and have discernment. To see if we are deceived by illusion or are “warriors triumphant, emerging from the battle.”

Best of Santa Cruz County

The 2013 Santa Cruz County Readers' Poll and Critics’ Picks It’s our biggest issue of the year, and in it, your votes—more than 6,500 of them—determined the winners of The Best of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll. New to the long list of local restaurants, shops and other notables that captured your interest: Best Beer Selection, Best Locally Owned Business, Best Customer Service and Best Marijuana Dispensary. In the meantime, many readers were ever so chatty online about potential new categories. Some of the suggestions that stood out: Best Teen Program and Best Web Design/Designer. But what about: Dog Park, Church, Hotel, Local Farm, Therapist (I second that!) or Sports Bar—not to be confused with Bra. Our favorite suggestion: Best Act of Kindness—one reader noted Café Gratitude and the free meals it offered to the Santa Cruz Police Department in the aftermath of recent crimes. Perhaps some of these can be woven into next year’s ballot, so stay tuned. In the meantime, enjoy the following pages and take note of our Critics’ Picks, too, beginning on page 91. A big thanks for voting—and for reading—and an even bigger congratulations to all of the winners. Enjoy.  -Greg Archer, EditorBest of Santa Cruz County Readers’ Poll INDEX
