Plus Letters to Good Times

Fall has arrived and so, too, has an increased tempo that will take us toward the end of 2010, and into another new year. Not so fast—there’s a lot to explore between now and December. And this week, in our annual Fall Home & Garden issue, we do just that. In crafting this year’s issue, we were particularly  impressed with gardens, and “growers” for that matter. As we move into an abundant time of harvest, take note of a few locals spotlighted this week who’ve mastered the art of generating lush gardens, particularly Cynthia Sandberg of Love Apple Farm (page 16). There are a few garden-related events taking place in the coming weeks that stand out, too, so it’s a bonanza out there. Plus Letters to Good Times

Last weekend, I attended the annual benefit for Life Lab’s Science Program and was impressed with everything that actually goes on at The Farm at UC Santa Cruz. Now celebrating 31 years, this lush garden is really an Eden for the community. Many things stand out, but you can’t help but be impressed with what Life Lab does for youth in this county. There’s something about working in the Earth, with the Earth and for the Earth that feeds the soul, and I suspect that the kids who’ve experienced some part of this program have gone on to appreciate life, people, living in a new way. In the meantime, kudos to chef Jon Dickinson and his mighty crew for serving up some of the freshest, most delicious foods I’ve tasted all year. Dickinson, who impresses at Cafe Cruz, donates all of his time for the event.

Controversy ... Or Not?

Labor Day is over, but for some reason I have this wild urge to go on maternity leave. Do you realize how much one can give birth to in a year’s time? I actually meant to write that as “how much I give birth to” but I didn’t. But actually, I just did, so here we are. Do we realize how much we create during the course of a year’s time—really? It’s something that has been on my mind recently as we move through our ever-hectic lives. And  I happily reflected on that idea with greater detail as I read this week’s cover story on a curious local dubbed Master Umi. Some of you may know of Umi, especially if you caught the film Pirate Radio. Umi, an enlightened master who lives right here in the Santa Cruz Mountains, once went by the name Tom Lodge, the renegade DJ who, decades ago, caused a stir, mostly from the British government who weren’t too pleased with the man’s broadcasts on Radio Caroline, among other things. What’s interesting to note is the evolution of this unique soul—he’s now a Zen master and has just released a book called “The Shipped That Rocked the World.” GT writer Damon Orion captures Master Umi’s tale. Read on and learn more about how Umi’s past events led him to explore the fascinating nature of Zen.

Wesak (Water) Taurus Solar Festival, Buddha Blesses the Earth

A most important celebration occurs Sunday, May 3—the Wesak Taurus Buddha Solar Festival/full moon. At the moment of the full moon the Buddha’s presence enters the Earth plane for eight minutes. He brings the Will-to-Good from the Father, which, when reaching humanity becomes goodwill (Mother Principle). Held yearly in a valley hidden deep within the Himalayas, the Wesak festival is prepared for for months in advance (beginning at Winter Solstice). On festival day, amidst pilgrims, disciples and Holy Ones gathered in the valley, the Buddha is invoked through movement, symbols and mantrams. At the moment of the full moon, hearing the words, “We are ready, Buddha, come,” the Lord of Illumination (brother of the Christ) appears in the clouds above the altar to emanate forth the will and purpose of God to earth. The blessing of the father is then held in safekeeping for distribution at the June full moon Goodwill Festival. The day of Wesak (May 3, 8:42 p.m. West Coast) all disciples (east and west) place crystal vessels filled with pure water outside (in gardens, on rooftops, porches and steps) under the heavens. As the Buddha blesses the world, all waters, including waters within our bodies, are blessed. The Buddha is accompanied by the Forces of Enlightenment to illuminate humanity’s minds. Humanity then begins to express new constructive, productive and beneficial ways of the Art of Livingness. Wesak covers five days—two days (before) of dedicated preparation, the actual festival “Day of Safeguarding,” and two days (after) distributing goodwill (the NGWS to humanity). Join us in the Valley by reciting the Great Invocation, mantra of direction for humanity.

My friend Emma from London came to visit for a few days in early March, so I took her wine tasting in the Santa Cruz Mountains—a rare treat for her, as there aren’t too many vineyards in the middle of London. Her visit reminded me how fortunate we are to live in this paradise of ultra-fresh produce, with grapes growing in wild profusion.
