Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club. I never appreciated his work before but I found him very credible and just enjoyed the role.

Well, I've always felt pretty safe in Santa Cruz, and although that was a shattering experience for our community, I still feel pretty safe here. I think we have a great sense of togetherness, really good support services for homeless people and others, and I think I feel no less secure now than I did a year ago.

I am very worried about the radiation that’s coming from Fukushima, and I don’t know how it's showing up—whether it's in seafood, or just through the air. But I think we are being impacted. I'll bet you if we checked with the local hospitals on people’s lymphs and things like that ... I know I've experienced a little of that and I'm having some tests. I’m not eating any fish.

The art in this community that we have, [like] Tom Scribner's statue, is a gathering place—as is a lot of the fine sculpture. I think it’s a part of the community that brings us all together, and I hope that we have a lot more of it.

Taking back Santa Cruz means feeling more safe on our streets in the night, being able to be out with our families and our friends in the evening and not worrying about getting hurt, or attacked, or being in our parks after sunset without worrying about what we might find. I've been at a lot of parks with my niece and found a lot of needles in the sand. So, not having to worry so much about what we’re doing and just enjoying our lives more.
