The former Ash bassist gained personal notoriety for penning the cult ballad “Grey Will Fade,” taking that song as the title and bedrock of her first solo effort, which featured the snarky breakup classic “Bastardo.” The new album strays further from straight-ahead rock to employ layered vocals and lush guitar underpinnings that sound like a natural extension of ’90s girl-power rock meeting 4AD harmony. Hatherley never wimps out, though. The stand-out single “I Want You to Know” (in the video, she dons boxing gloves and knocks out three enormous men) has enough thumping drum work to make your adrenaline rush. Deep Blue is one of those rare albums with perfect track ordering (in the age of the shuffle no less). The first six songs are each mini-masterpieces of pop rock with catchy and distinct melodies. While Charlotte has “a sound” it’s not one so homogenous that her various songs don’t stand apart from each other. The back half of the album can’t hold up to that standard, but what I’m trying to say is there’s enough brilliant work here to justify the price, whatever it is you end up paying. I put it that way because there’s no U.S. release date set as of now, and iTunes is only carrying the aforementioned video. You can purchase the album at her site (charlottehatherley.com) for £9.
