Blue Note Records

Fresh off the triumph of the duo’s debut eponymous album, Greg Kurstin and Inara George return with another wry spin at the sparkling mod sincerity of French croque pop. The opening track, a single to blow away all previous singles, is titled “Polite Dance Song,” with a lyric containing the album title; it kicks around a shy dance beat as George turns up her dainty chin and asks if, um, maybe, did you want to wave your hands in the air? The track isn’t all conceit, however, as it builds to a gospel finish that slathers on some synth and does seem to incite a rather well-manned riot. Compared to this masterpiece, the remaining four tracks provide subtle pleasures, but the percussive lines each carry an infectious forward momentum, and George’s vocals take the sexy overdubbing of Goldfrapp, strip out the vapid, throw in a dash of bitter, and seduce from there. The all-too-brief recording closes with a tone-perfect and melancholy cover of “How Deep Is Your Love,” rescuing the tune from grocery store hell, whether it deserves it or not.
