Acapulco Restaurant
1116 Pacific Ave., Santa Cruz
831-426-7588
Sound Bites: Some of the most unique flavors come to life at Acapulco, whose authentic Mexican, seafood and American offerings always impress. Expect a large variety of dishes: chicken mole, chile verde, sizzling fajitas, crab & shrimp enchiladas, garlic portabella fajitas, grilled chicken fettuccini with artichoke hearts, or the glazed chicken teriyaki.
Bottom Line: Try a bandito—you’ll only need one.

Al Boccalino
7960 Soquel Drive, suite E, Aptos

Sound Bites: The ravioli and gnocchi are homemade, the pizza is tossed to be thin and light, and the tiramisu is tops in town. Don’t be fooled by its strip mall location; inside the doors is the beating heart of a rustic Italian kitchen. Naturally, there’s an extensive wine list, and even a chance to sample Peroni Italian beer.

Al Dente
415 Seabright Ave., Santa Cruz
831-466-0649
Sound Bites: “The entertainment now is at the tables,” says Al Dente co-owner Joe Michaelis. “We treat everybody like they’re coming to a dinner party at our house, so if they want it to be lively, it’s lively. If everyone seems to want a romantic mood, we let the room dictate that.” Michaelis took over this popular place with Dan Heichel last year and the place has been thriving. The menu has carried over directly from Fanni’s, with some of the specials being run permanently, like the prosciutto-wrapped prawns. New items include snow crab and shrimp cannelloni, and butternut squash and lobster ravioli. Look for lunch items too.

Bottom Line: Jam-packed with locals.

Sestri
Named after Sestri Levante in Italy, one of Santa Cruz’s sister cities. It’s also the birthplace of Mauro Olivieri, who owns the restaurant with his two sons John and Joel Mootz. Try the Bistecca al Mio Modo (a smoked New York steak with garlic mashed potatoes and Gorgonzola butter). It’s simply the best. And the desserts are out of this world. As Sestri says, it’s “inspired Italian cooking delivered at a neighborhood restaurant price.”  (655 Capitola Road, Santa Cruz. Call 831-479-0200.) Photo: Kelly Vaillancourt
