Welcome to Santa Cruz County. Relax. Let go of your life. Empty your mind. Do that, and you’re certain to have a memorable time here. (Although, most admit that the area is the perfect remedy for stress.) So, now that you’ve officially arrived, flip through the following pages and ponder our suggestions on what to do during your visit. Things to Know: The county is home to a wide variety of breathtaking landscapes and cultures. For the forest dwellers, head north toward the communities of Felton, Ben Lomond and Boulder Creek. Need to stick your feat in the sand and feel the brisk ocean spray? Head to the beach—there’s no shortage here. And if you’re charmed by the ambiance of small-town communities, then wander into Aptos, Capitola Village, Downtown Santa Cruz, Soquel or Watsonville. Each area has its own distinct personality.
Little-known Secret: The region is host to some of the most stellar wineries in the country. (Move over Napa!) And Don’t Forget: If you’re here during the summer months, dress in layers. The morning fog typically burns off by noon but it tends to be on the cool side before that. December through March is typically “rainy” season, but there’s still plenty of sunshine to be had in between. The area code here is 831—you and your cell phone will get used to those three digits fast. What else? Fun. Plan on having quite a bit of it. Have a good time. —Greg Archer, Editor, Good Times
