The Santa Cruz Mountains represent a nostalgic amalgam of the Ozark Mountains, and both New and Old England. And they sit in an area of perpetual Spring. Any wine made in this geographic region, not just those made in Santa Cruz County, may be designated a Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Appellation. Sitting in a moderate climate, mostly above the fogline, some of the best wines in the state, indeed some world-class wines, come from the Santa Cruz Mountains. Except for a few wineries close to Santa Cruz, many are in rural areas. Most are in very scenic settings, and it’s recommended to explore the backcountry to see another part of life here and discover wines that are largely handmade, many rustic and elegant in their unique style. You will discover, too, that many local wines offer distinct flavors, and there may be a temptation to take home a bottle—or two, or three. You will notice that some local wineries do not have tasting rooms, and only those with fixed hours open to the public are listed here. For a complete listing of Santa Cruz Mountains wineries, call 831-479-WINE, or go to scmwa.com . Call ahead for tasting hours and to get specific directions. Wine trails brochures and maps are available at all wineries. Take note the following list of wineries in the area:
